The amount of casual PC users telling me my website is broken *because* I don't paywall my writing nor track my users or shove a mailing list thing at them is worrying me. I know it's unconventional to have a website *not* throw popups at you every visit, but come on, this is deeply unsetteling. I can't express how many people are scared of my website *because* I don't track my users, I don't bombard them with things upon visiting. The only thing that's broken at the moment is the navigation menu button doesn’t work with JavaScript disabled, but there's a site map non JavaScript people can use. https://sightlessscribbles.com/ #WebDev

holy shit. a website that doesn't gatekeep/paywall/like/subscribe spam me. have an updoot.

Or at least give me a cookie! Or share my RSS feed. :) @tezoatlipoca
@WeirdWriter
If I visit any website that demands I accept cookies or essential ones. I don't proceed
@WeirdWriter This is, how the web was intended. Thank you.

@WeirdWriter

Same, I also have zero cookies, zero tracking on my website. So no cookie banner.

What do you want me to do, open a cookie banner for you just to tell you I don't use cookies? Mhkay.

@WeirdWriter For real, they think it’s broken because there is no cookie banner or something? Their understanding of the web has been broken by seeing all these dark patterns and surveillance everywhere
Yes. Some are instantly suspicious of it *because* it doesn't do those things, like they are afraid I have malware on my site so are afraid to click links on it. @GreenSkyOverMe

@WeirdWriter @GreenSkyOverMe

Whereas the old ones trust your site more because its simple and static.

You should tell them a council of Unix greyhairs have approved your site.

@WeirdWriter "uh excuse me sir your site must be broken because you're not trying to be annoying and hustle"

(I will grant that some people DO need to set up paywalls and such to their website, but that doesn't mean I like it!)

@WeirdWriter seriously though I know I don't always actively check your site but it's better done than 99% of sites

1- You remember RSS feeds exist
2- While "Simple" in design, it doesn't feel like you're half-done, it feels like you were like "I want my site to be simple and easy to use, even if I don't have javascript snowflakes*"

  • The javascript snowflakes are a joke if you add those only add them for April Fools lol
HAHA! I forgot about the snowflakes! :) I use a static site so I am not even sure if that's possible, but mainly yes. My website is for reading, not interacting with! But yes the texts were basically like this. I combined all their short texts into one long one. "“Hey Robbie. I visited your website today and, is this really your site? There's no cookie banner. Where's your mailing list? Nothing’s popping out at me? Does this site have malware on it? I clicked around but I can't find the cookie banner. You're a writer so why don't you have your mailing list be more visible to people visiting your website? Is this supposed to be a joke website or something. I don't understand the joke." "@lapis

@WeirdWriter I like how we're so USED to all these popups that site LACKING them is a sign of malware

(There's this tumblr post I saw that basically said with the amount of ads and banners you see on a standard site today that would have been a sign in the 00s that you had at least 3 viruses on your computer)

@WeirdWriter we need a "my website doesn't treat you as the product" webring. Only tracking on my site is there to make sure I don't unknowingly pass into the paid tier haha.

@WeirdWriter ooh "achievement unlocked" as the kids used to say 😂

Not had that yet but I'm in a similar boat with my site.
