I need some size advice.

My MIL bought yarn some years ago to knit herself a vest. She's now decided she can't do that herself anymore and so I offered to make it for her.

So far no problem, I picked out a pattern that I think she'll like. But I'm not sure, what size to make. She's close to 90 and has become frail and tiny over the last few years. She's a few hours away so I can't just hop over and take some measurements.

Sizewise she's wearing a European 38 / 40 so I decided to go with the M.

But as she's become so short, I'm not sure about the length. She doesn't know her height, but it's maybe 1.55 m (5 ft 1") with a short torso.

Can anybody out there with a similar body type give me a hint on what a good total length for a vest (sleeveless, to be worn over long sleeved thin shirts) would be? I just want to be sure it's in the right ballpark - high hip or a bit longer.

@FanCityKnits could you ask her to measure a garment that fits her well? Might be easier fo her to do it.
@Ppppawa @FanCityKnits Or maybe someone who's around and can ask for her favourite vest or similar garment.

That's complicated - she's still living by herself, nearly 4 hours away from us, no other family close by. I don't know any of her friends, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't own a tape measure.

I'm making this vest

That should be rather forgiving widthwise - but length is difficult and I don't want it to hang around her knees.

@FanCityKnits I'm 160 cm with a short torso, and if I measure next to the (D-cup) boobs it's 50 cm to my high hip, over the boobs it's 62 cm.

@Gulleko

Thanks!

That's something I can work with.
