Combined the visit with a wonderful spinners' day in Arnhem. So nice to meet other people with the same weirdo hobby in person. Thank you for good company @MarieLouise .

Visited a replica (?) in the Open Air Museum in Arnhem of a hut that belonged to the grandfather of my grandmother. He sold goods to fishermen and bought fish that he then sold in the city. On weekdays he lived in this hut just outside Amsterdam in a location now fully absorbed by the city. In the weekend he was with his wife and children in a nearby village and settled the bills with the fishermen. He sold the hut to the museum when he pensioned at high age in 1917.
I want to try to help my wife with switching from threads to fedi (we've talked about it and she's open to the idea), and am trying to prep an initial follow list for her to get started.

Something I'd love to include would be accounts posting about ballet (or professional dance in general), but I'm having a hard time finding such accounts.

Anyone know if they exist?

I remember watching a very wizened old tailor in Ho Chi Minh City sew an extra piece of the woven fabric of a suit into the inside jacket pocket.

Invisible mending techniques used to be very, very common in Asia, and you need a generous piece of the same fabric to weave it into place to cover a hole or tear.

I am sure he's passed on now, but that little act lives on in me.

Interesting #Radiolab on #electricity + cattle, a follow up on a #Zetland piece.

I remain a bit sceptical about the idea of stray voltage affecting cows. It seems very implausible and there are surely other factors to consider. But a quick web search gives lots of hits.

It may be a thing and it may also be a case of mass hysteria among farmers (the mobile phone towers and cancer scare also sprang to mind). And it might be a third effect. Or all three?

But I think it's going to be something we hear more of as the #GreenTransition gets going...

The Resistance of a Cow

There’s something rotten in the cows of Denmark. And Minnesota. And Wisconsin. And Idaho. What could cause a previously thriving herd of majestic dairy cattle to stop drinking water a...

A Newly Discovered Recording Lets You Hear Delta Blues Legend Robert Johnson in Stunning Clarity

Great swathes of rock music since the nineteen-sixties would never have existed, we're sometimes told, were it not for the recordings of Robert Johnson. Certainly the likes of Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, and Bob Dylan have never hesitated to acknowledge his influence.
