I need a program that would recognize bird species from the sounds outside our house. Central/East Europe. One with more false negatives (unrecognized) than false positives (incorrectly recognized). To prove that some birds indeed are here. Retoots appreciated.

#bird #birds #birdwatching

EDIT: thanks for all the replies. Apparently Merlin is the solution, even for Eastern Europe. Now I have to find a way to get it running on a PC, not a phone. EDIT2: It must work for hours, unattended.

@Szescstopni

i only know Merlin, idk if it fits your (bird) bill tho

@inquiline The sound part seems to be US-centered.
@Szescstopni @inquiline They’ve been adding in European species.
@Szescstopni @inquiline I know you can download region based bird packs.
@inquiline @Szescstopni Merlin is awesome, should work globally. https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/

@labria The sound part seems to be US-centered.
@Szescstopni they claim to have global coverage… worked for me here in Ireland, but I only tried on basic stuff around the house.
Also, it’s from a uni and it’s free, so why not give it a shot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Szescstopni Merlin Bird ID app on iPhone and Android is the one that I use. Seems very accurate.

@Szescstopni This one is pretty good — in my experience, it works in North America, Colombia, Mexico, Vietnam, and Japan:

@Szescstopni It might make more sense to record the sound for hours, then fast fwd through it later to identify specific calls.
