I'm annoyed by "tech bros don't understand consent"-jokes.

1. They perpetuate a false notion.

2. They are ableist and only work, because an inability is still seen as more embarrassing and worthy of attack than malice by many.

3. Because many of the people making those jokes probably wouldn't react that well to it being pointed out.
Because just like with racist or homophobic jokes "it's just a joke" as if they have no message and words no meaning.

I thought a silly comparison would be, that if you believe that tech bros don't understand consent, you probably also believe that bank robbers don't understand property rights.

But then I remembered, that as ridiculous as that sounds, there actually are people who believe that a group of people is inherently criminal, because they can't understand the concept of "private property".

@hauchvonstaub Don't forget those who don't understand the difference between private and personal property.
@hauchvonstaub If a group of people acts like they understand a lot but actually do not - that's funny!

@kawentzmann
There is a difference between joking about someone overestimating themself and just joking about someones inability.
Tech bros aren't known for caring about consent, but then failing to implement it.
So you're not joking about someones lack of self-judgement.

To come back to the racist comparison, "If a group of people think they're human and deserve equal rights...".

You're doing the "it's just a joke bro, don't think about it too much"-bit to defend your ableism.
