If you followed the details on #systemd and its insistance of adding #AgeVerification into a major swath of #Linux #distributions , it looks like today is your day to see its introduction into at least 1 #distro ... but I suspect there may be more.

I did _not_ proceed with systemd updates on my 2 primary linux boxes, running #AlmaLinux v9.7

I'm at a point now that I have to seriously consider whether I need to transition away from systemd entirely and stop supporting those who include it.

@lumiworx as someone who hasn’t made the jump to Linux yet, this still concerns me. Like countries I’d emigrate to, but they’re becoming less free.

So if you don’t mind a basic non-expert question. Wikipedia says the alternatives to #systemd are SysVinit or OpenRC. Is that your direction?

@CheapPontoon

The minority of distros that do not use it have a small handful of alternatives, but yes, those are the 2 that are better known... SysV and related flavors being the predecessors that systemd replaced.

Some have morphed into variations of the original, but some are rather unique... but all of them do the same basic/underlying tasks.

@lumiworx thanks are either of the alternatives less likely to succumb to apparent political pressure than systemd?

@CheapPontoon

Honestly... I wish I could answer that with any degree of clarity or knowledge that I could be certain of. I just don't know - yet - what the answer would be.

Each distro is different in soooo many ways when it comes to governance and direction. Weeks ago, when the systemd nonsense popped up, I tagged both public accounts for @rockylinux and @almalinux to, perhaps, weigh in officially on what their positions might be. I got crickets in return. We all may have to wait and see.

@CheapPontoon

What I have strived to do - both personally, and in my previous professional capacities - was to make OS choices that offered robust solutions and were reliable over long-term use.

Rolling release distros (usually ones that are always intent on being bleeding edge) are not stable enough for either of those capacities, which limits the pool for those with the same view. They are - or soon will be - equally affected by the whole systemd mess, so my replacements are even fewer.
