Shout out to the dude in Manchester who has decided to try to cash in on the GenAI boom and then shit the bed when journalists tried to fact check anything.

Is Chris Kenna Manchester’s first AI billionaire in the making — or a serial fantasist?

He’s been feted by the press as a tech pioneer. But we can’t find his data centres

The Mill
lol at the idea Rochdale canal is going to cool an AI data center
@GossiTheDog I am struggling to imagine the required area for a crop that can exist in a vertical farm producing ca. 1,000 meals per day let alone what that crop could be.
Soya beans made more meat-like by adding genes for pig proteins

A company called Moolec has created transgenic soya beans called “Piggy Sooy” in which a quarter of the protein is pig protein rather than plant protein

New Scientist

@GossiTheDog I agree the Rochdale canal would be a bad choice for data centre cooling
Salford Quays where it is to be located is a much better bet for the volume of water needed.

Still don't think it'll happen though

@GossiTheDog
Seeing where this datacentre is meant to be reminded me of this just around the corner for some reason. It's been in this state for at least 20 years.
@simon @GossiTheDog that mangy thing is also the result of SCC ineptitude, and definitely a scummy developer attempting to bait and switch the planning scope, then claim it was untenable when they didn't get their desired revisions. Developer's ltd company doing that building went into 'sudden' liquidation not long afterwards iirc, to phoenix and avoid their liabilities. A lot of debtors unpaid and resultant job losses.
@cw
That's interesting and not surprising. Kenna sounds like at best a fantasist and at worst a conman, but I suspect he wouldn't be the first or the last in the Quays, and AI is yet another vehicle for it.
@GossiTheDog
@GossiTheDog I mean given sufficient power supply modern DC's can be closed circuit for water and don't actually need monumental amounts of water. Still stinks of green washing tho obvs
@Landwomble @GossiTheDog modern data centers use evaporative cooling to cool down the radiators. Closed circuit is simply not enough to provide adequate cooling when energy densities reach hundreds of kilowatts per rack. These numbers are far beyond the imagination in generic telco data centers, yet a reality in HPC and AI.

@GossiTheDog "may we see the food banks you are working with?"

"uhhhhh..."

@GossiTheDog they’ll need to move a few bikes, trollers and tyres first!
@GossiTheDog Great some actual journalism, now do Sam Altman, Nadella and Musk.
Sam Altman May Control Our Future—Can He Be Trusted?

New interviews and closely guarded documents shed light on the persistent doubts about the head of OpenAI, Ronan Farrow and Andrew Marantz write.

The New Yorker
@GossiTheDog Ian Betteridge actually exists in this timeline... and he's even on fedi...

@GossiTheDog

He's as honest as anyone else in AI... what's the problem?

@GossiTheDog Wait, is he the same guy who used to be an MTV presenter who then created and starred in a seemingly low grade tv show? https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3398823/
@mx @GossiTheDog looks like it. The birth date would tie up with him being 19 on 9/11. Plus the anecdote about military experience in the IMDB trivia.
@GossiTheDog Honestly, we'd probably all be better off if more AI bros ran a fully reality-free con; rather than expending massive amounts of real world energy and resources.
