It can't be said often enough, so I'll say it again:

Solar and batteries can power the world! It's cheaper than gas (esp. at today's prices) and a lot more reliable.

By 2030, solar and batteries could supply 90% of electricity to 80% of the world's population for < €80/MWh (including backup).

It's obvious now that solar and batteries are going to be the cheapest, most reliable, and least volatile way to expand a power grid. Increasing dependence on fossil gas generation now—as many governments are contemplating—would be a terrible mistake, both economically and geopolitically.
@chrisnelder They're the marginal resource in IRPs, at least for #CA
@andybrwn There are a few different ways to interpret "marginal" here, so perhaps you'd like to expand on that and clarify?
@chrisnelder It's what's getting used for setting the marginal energy capacity cost for PG&E (plus a number of assumptions) per public testimony
@chrisnelder personal experience with PV, thermal & battery back up have produced the following in 19 years
PV: 120MWh
Thermal: 90MWh
Still very efficient, at 92%
Battery was a late addition in 2019, but has saved average 31% of total production (14MWh so far) ensure we can go overnite w/out grid top up
10kw pv & battery system
5 kw thermal PV system
180 degree, south facing roof
30 degree pitch, Southwest England
51degrees latitude
Best investment we ever made
@Sine_Nomine That's awesome, esp. in England! Sounds like a pretty ideal array orientation. Have you run the numbers on the economics of your investment at all? I'm sure Farage, Badenoch & co. would be very interested in hearing them. 😉
@chrisnelder as early adopter's we paid over the odds, but did so as a long term fin & eco investment, tot cost was 19k (5k thermal, 9k PV, 5k battery)
we earn back:
FIT payment: £900 / yr : £17,000 approx
PV export: 51% ave @ 15p/KW = £9,000 to date
Paid for itself in 11.5 yrs
Co2 saved 22,912 metric ton
House runs on electric, bills are minimal
We like to think we're doing our part, environmentally speaking.
In short the numbers add up, pls tell farage & badenock 🫡
@Sine_Nomine Love it, thanks for the data!

@chrisnelder do you think mega corporations that make billions from gas give a shit? Superiority Complex and Sociopathy are mental disorders, not morality, reason and logic glitches. What are you planning to do about that part? Believe it less? They will keep bulldozing over without a plan to address this. They've been doing that for generations now, we are just getting more informed about it now, and every generation has had this pattern

Also the oil and gas industry and the owners aren't just about profit from the oil and gas industry, they also profit from the wars and foot placement in those different regions, and economical decisions in those regions because of it. They have multiple contracts and agreements with other war mongering companies, be it supplying weaponry, “creating jobs” (aka wage slavery, aka cheap labor for dollar value profiting) while instilling “immigrants will take your job” domestically to distract from their dollar value profiting schemes internationally (outsourced jobs), amongst many other goals.

Capitalist FASCIST regime thats been escalating since the early 2000s and before. It’s NEVER as clear cut and single minded as it’s projected, and there are usually multiple benefits that they have their disgusting sleazy hands in. If you think news and current “journalism” isn't curtailed to follow along these agendas, while only projecting surface level plots, you really are living in some fairy tale.

#Decarbonization of the #grid has 3x legs (#Solar, #Wind & #Ocean) and and a pole in the middle (#BESS - #batteries). All must be exploited in balance to achieve the goals of 1/ #EnergyIndependence from #FossilFuels, and 2/ #EnergyResilience from the #grid. @chrisnelder
