No one will read this, but I wanted to express my thoughts about @arcanechat.

I'm really disappointed: they're making fun of Session shutting down, claiming it's not really decentralized. The thing is, ArcaneChat is decentralized too, but not in the same way. If their server goes down, all users from their instance won't be able to chat again until it's back up.

Session uses a network with many nodes. For it to go completely down, all of the nodes must be down at the same time.

If a new user discovers ArcaneChat through these posts, I don't think they'll have a good first impression.

One last thing: you're saying Session got millions of dollars but can't survive—but you also asked for donations in one of your posts.

I find that behaviour extremely hypocritical, completely irresponsible, and unprofessional.

@buage buddy you are a bit out of the loop, ArcaneChat can use several relays at the same time, if arcanechat.me goes down it doesn't matter much, your other relays/nodes will keep working, it is also super easy to migrate from one relay to another

about asking for donations, that has nothing to do with the fact that session is burning thousands per month in server costs while chatmail relays are super cheap to run

@arcanechat you... oh my god... first of all very unprofessional to reply to someone by calling them "buddy" and second, don't try to always be right, YOU ARE NOT RIGHT, and about session being centralized... OK file server and push notification aren't but there is almost 300 nodes, so if STF shuts down... there is still messages, so don't roast someone if you don't know anything, privacy matters and that's why it can burn a lot of money, but is it worth it absolutely

@buage

> Session uses a network with many nodes. For it to go completely down, all of the nodes must be down at the same time.

Session is not as decentralized as you think, you will not even be able to send files anymore, it is not us saying it but Session themselves:

@arcanechat First of all, thank you for taking the time to read my posts.

On the first point about the ArcaneChat relays, I admit I didn't knew about that, and you got the point here.

However, about the donations, Session and ArcaneChat has asked for donations, so that's why I'm pointing that out.

Also, yes, I am aware that Session attachments may not work if it shuts downs, but messaging would still work.

> However, about the donations, Session and ArcaneChat has asked for donations, so that's why I'm pointing that out.

and then??? I didn't criticize they ask for donations, I criticized they need so much money to operate, do you even know how much money ArcaneChat have received in donations since its inception???? less than 1000 euros, the point being made here is that the operation cost is much lower

anyways, you are free to use whatever you like

@arcanechat

The thing I am genuinely curious about is that you are taking the choice to critique another privacy focused project when you share similar values, doing that is gonna damage your reputation, and that's not something I often see from open-source developers..

@buage if something is wrong I don't see any problem in pointing it out, session has received millions, MILLIONS, this is in the end money that could have flow into better more sustainable projects

there is nothing wrong in pointing out that it is a mistake to have thrown so many millions into what now seems to have been just a crypto token scam

we could just ignore it and not talk about it but how are you going to learn from mistakes then?

@arcanechat

Well, I'm asking why you're making fun of Session and asking for donations when you do the same thing.

Also, I never said there was something wrong about pointing out that it's a ""mistake"".

I really wonder why you are almost only talking about donations in your recent replies and not about the fact you are mocking Session in general, here for example : https://fosstodon.org/@arcanechat/116381009753864750

Now, I'll stop replying to avoid just creating a comment loop.

Have a good day!

@buage if for you mocking is pointing out that a project that requires so much money to operate is snake oil, yes I am mocking Session
