Question:

I know that I am now reluctant to fill out a Google Form and that includes coming from researchers I trust. It's Google I don't trust with my data.

Do people know of ways to get forms and surveys up for free or a low cost that are based on servers in countries with reasonably low corruption governments? Servers hosted by companies with good ethics and privacy policies?

I just encountered something where they wanted my data and I wanted to give it, but opted not to. #AskFedi

Nextcloud can do forms. Also a heap of other fun stuff. Can be self-hosted (I.E.: free) or one can find fully hosted solutions from €5/mo... https://nextfiles.one/de/sichere-cloud-fuer-privatkunden-und-vereine-29/#preise

@doboprobodyne Thank you.

@ml no worries! Did some more digging: there are free providers if you want to have a play. https://nextcloud.com/sign-up/ when you're logged in as the user with administrative control, there's a little app-store with a variety of open-source apps you can run on your server, and one of them is for forms. https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/forms

(But also it's fun to browse all the other apps, some of them are super useful!)

@doboprobodyne At this point I'm not using such a thing, but I wanted to know so I have answers next time a researcher is asking me to participate in research or in feedback or whatever. There are marginalized populations who have an especial need of privacy yet they do want ethical research out there. There have to be better ways of involving people than Google Forms.
