@ParadeGrotesque @Gina you hear anything about that? Massively cool if true.

@fedops @Gina

Yup. It's been a while coming, but it's the right decision in the end.

@ParadeGrotesque hoo boy. Network effect incoming.
@Gina

@fedops @ParadeGrotesque I hadn't heard about the French gov mandating Linux workstations for all their Ministries, that's great news!

The Dutch, French and German workspace teams were already working together on a Linux OS within the EDIC's 100 day challenges, but I don't think a choice for a distro has been made yet. 🇪🇺

I'm super impressed with how proactive the French are. Good work @numerique_gouv 👏

#EDIC #EUpolicy #DigitalSovereignty #Opensource #linux

@Gina well clearly 100 days isn't enough to decide on a distro! 😂😂

Jokes aside, yes - very impressive. Please do continue, it will be uphill a loooooong ways.

@ParadeGrotesque @numerique_gouv

@Gina @fedops @ParadeGrotesque @numerique_gouv any source on Germany, France and Netherlands working together on a Linux Distro ?
@olibrendel @Gina @fedops @ParadeGrotesque @numerique_gouv any idea whether projects like +1 Linux (https://www.schleswig-holstein.de/DE/landesregierung/themen/digitalisierung/linux-plus1/Projekt) are related or part of this, or independent efforts? I'm very excited for all of it.

@iris @olibrendel @fedops @ParadeGrotesque @numerique_gouv I don't know, although I assume that SH has been consulted by the French teams. The Dutch teams also visited SH recently, which was immensely helpful.

@AlexRosenthal leads the DigitalHub.SH, he can probably say more about this :)

@Gina @iris @olibrendel @fedops @ParadeGrotesque @numerique_gouv Hey, nice development indeed and as far as i see, the way is good, but also i'm not sure if we have further exchange about linux. We talk to everbody who is interested to cooperate and i cant speak for the whole country, so don't take it as this. Anyway we are planing to extend our activities and are open for an kind of exchange.

@olibrendel no idea.

I think they should form a foundation of some sort and buy Suse now that it's for sale. Then it would be easy to finance lots of developers from yearly license payments. If you have a million desktops across Europe even a measly 10 Eur/year would easily finance 50 full-time devs. Think about what could be achieved this way...

Exclusive: EQT eyes potential $6 billion sale of Linux pioneer SUSE, sources say

Private equity firm EQT AB is exploring a sale of open-source software company SUSE in a deal that could value it up to $6 billion (5.1 billion euros), according to two people familiar with ‌the matter.

@Gina probably less than 1 year of windows licenses for all of Europe.
@olibrendel @ParadeGrotesque @numerique_gouv

@Gina @fedops @olibrendel

It's open source.

In France, one of the first adopters of Linux is the Gendarmerie Nationale and they maintain their own fork of Ubuntu if I remember correctly.

There is also a couple of French Linux distributions, such as Mageia.

@olibrendel @fedops @ParadeGrotesque @numerique_gouv no official source, except our Dutch gov autonomous workspace team (DAWO) that collaborates with the French and German teams through the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium 🇪🇺

@Gina
the French government is not actually moving to Linux.. one of their departments is, but that's it for now. this news has been overinflated because people haven't properly read the original source I think..

@fedops @ParadeGrotesque @numerique_gouv

@elduvelle

No, while it is true that one agency has already announced moving to Linux, the announcement was also that this agency (essentially the IT branch of the French government) was now mandating all other agencies and all ministries to move to Linux, away from windows.

More details in French here:

https://www.numerique.gouv.fr/sinformer/espace-presse/souverainete-numerique-reduction-dependances-extra-europeennes/

@Gina @fedops

numerique.gouv.fr

@ParadeGrotesque yes, I read
that and it doesn't actually say that all other agencies now have to use Linux.. I'll believe it once I see it written without ambiguity!

@Gina @fedops

@elduvelle

"La DINUM coordonnera un plan interministériel de réduction des dépendances extra-européennes. Chaque ministère (opérateurs inclus) sera tenu de formaliser son propre plan d'ici l'automne"

In other words, all French government ministries have to share a plan to migrate away from US solutions by autumn. I suspect Microsoft is part of these US solutions.

I think that's clear enough.

@Gina @fedops

@ParadeGrotesque
No, it's definitely not clear enough!

Your French quote actually says "réduction des dépendances" : reduce the dependencies"

and it is not saying that the plan will explain "how to migrate away by autumn" - they have to write the plan by autumn. The plan could well state that they will reduce their dependencies by switching from Teams to a non-US equivalent by the year 2050. And it will just be a plan, probably used to evaluate the cost- benefits of this reduction.

words matter!
