It’s past the time for Canada to start cutting as many ties with the US as humanly possible. No more F-35s. Ditch the autopact and make one with Asia, Africa and Europe. Make individual trade deals with some states perhaps and treat those more like sovereign countries. Treat the US like the fascist country it has become.

There’s no doubt that not having the US in NATO weakens it, but if they’re going to act like the enemy maybe NATO would be better off.

@NunavutBirder And no more Budweiser. It's dreadful stuff.
@psneeze way back, when I still lived in Manitoba and still drank, Bud couldn’t be sold there because the labelling etc was too close to Standard beer. Another reason it was my beer of choice then.
@NunavutBirder Believe it or not my favourite now (after Guinness) is Canadian by Molston.
@psneeze Back then I found that Standard had more flavour than other Canadian beers and had the added advantage that no one took my beer at parties. But nothing alcoholic has passed these lips in 35 years.

@NunavutBirder I like your beer security strategy there.

And well done on the 35 years.

@NunavutBirder FYI the Auto Pact hasn't been in place for a quarter of a century, since it was found to violate WTO rules. It was largely superseded by NAFTA anyway.
@NunavutBirder ugh why do some Canadians think that the huge ass continent they live in ends at the border of Texas and not in fuckin Chile lmao "I guess it's just Canada and the US here! We better make deals with Africa"
@dinozombie … and the rest of the Americas. There fixed it.

@NunavutBirder we should align our vehicle standards with EU. Emissions would be difficult, but safety is relatively simple because other than yank-tanks most reasonable cars are very similar to the ones sold in Europe.

Our best assets here are the St Lawrence/Great Lakes seaway system and the railroads. We need better inland ports and east-west transportation though. Anybody that’s done Hwy 17 knows.

Building codes would be more difficult to decouple but it would be so nice to get rid of the last pieces of the awful imperial system :)

@NunavutBirder Most of us around the world are saying exactly that. I doubt the US will ever be the same again.

@NunavutBirder

It would be nice, but Canada sends arms to Israel, condemns Iran’s defence against an illegal attack, and continues to deny reparations for colonialism and slavery.

We are committed to US empire. We just do empire politely.

Carney’s speech at Davos was brave for a vassal state, but he put the sign back in the window at the first sign that colonialism was marching again.

#gaza #colonialism #genocide #iran #empire #cdnpoli

@firstprimate every journey starts with a step. And we need to take some. Clearly you don’t think that’s possible.

@NunavutBirder

Not at all. I am merely pointing out that there deep structural issues that need to be overcome if there is to be real change instead of a feel good, boycotting USA but still living with a colonial mindset fake change.

@firstprimate indeed. It will not be easy.

@NunavutBirder

Thanks to Gwyneth, we even have a name for it… a conscious uncoupling

I wonder if these kind of supranational organisations should't be exclusive to democratic states. Only one rotten ingredient can spoil a whole dish. We are seeing in the EU, how Orban funnels all EU funds into his and his friends pockets. We are seeing the UN, NATO and democracy as a whole rotting, because no one sorts out the rotten fruits.

Karl Popper's paradox of tolerance still stands.
