Half of my clan was murdered by the Russians during the invasion in ’56. The rest fled during the winter months that followed and found freedom via Austria. Well, ‘freedom’—in Europe, they saw us as pitiful refugees, but also as discriminated immigrants. We were shunted from one place to another across Europe. Some never managed to settle down again. If I’d been there, I’d have shot those hypocritical bastards through the head. Out of pure revenge.
