Did Canada really pass a law making at least ten million more people into citizens, without even a background check? I don't recall much debate about this last year; seems to me we should have given this some study.

Millions of Americans can now claim Canadian citizenship by descent. But they have to prove it | CBC News

Amid rising tensions in the United States and increased global volatility, many Americans are looking to Canada — and their roots — for a possible way out following recent changes to Canada’s citizenship rules.

@mpjgregoire @NMBA Wow. The National Post is pure garbage. Misleading, propagandistic, fear-mongering. Absolute shit. No wonder I blocked it years ago. Thanks for the reminder! (1/2)
As for the issue at hand, this does not “grant” anyone citizenship. No right to vote. No terrorists roaming the streets. It allows *qualifying people* to *apply* for Canadian citizenship. As someone with experience trying to bring deserving people to Canada, I can tell you the process is NOT GUARANTEED, and NOT EASY. The myth that it’s easy for foreigners to move to Canada is right-wing propaganda. It’s dam near impossible for most people. (2/2)

I frequently link to articles from the #NationalPost, @maverick604 , but I almost always tag them (sometimes my character limit doesn't allow that), so I suggest you block that tag if you don't want even to see links to that paper.

But to the substance of your reply, I understood the #CBC article also as saying that people with Canadian ancestry had become citizens, not that they could apply. I hope I'm not spreading a misunderstanding. Could you please send me a link for correction?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the examples from https://immigration.ca/claiming-canadian-citizenship-by-descent-under-canadas-new-citizenship-act-bill-c-3/ show that one is automatically a Canadian citizen if one's great-grandparent was a Canadian citizen, even if the family has lived abroad since then.

"The individuals targeted by Bill C-3, are not applying for a “grant” of citizenship that has an expiration date. Instead, an applicant is applying for “proof of citizenship” [...] for a status that the law now recognizes the claimant has held since birth."
