Guitarists:

I’m supposed to be picking up my brand new Yamaha FG800J acoustic guitar tomorrow, and I have a question. I have seen multiple comments that I should consider replacing the strings with either Elixir or D’Addario 12-53 phosphor bronze strings. Something like that.

I’m sure it’s not entirely necessary, but is it worth spending another $20?

Just tell me if it’s worth it or a waste. I’m a beginner and don’t know shit. OTOH, it’s only $20.

@dtm It would probably be a good idea to swap the strings out anyway, especially if the guitar has been sitting around in a shop. Changing strings on your axe is something every beginner must learn as well!

@Tribear I don’t remember it being all that complicated. I’ve seen a guy do it while continuing to play on stage. I think I can manage it on a stationary guitar.

I ordered the guitar and had it shipped to the store, but who knows where it came from before that.
