Did Canada really pass a law making at least ten million more people into citizens, without even a background check? I don't recall much debate about this last year; seems to me we should have given this some study.

Millions of Americans can now claim Canadian citizenship by descent. But they have to prove it | CBC News

Amid rising tensions in the United States and increased global volatility, many Americans are looking to Canada — and their roots — for a possible way out following recent changes to Canada’s citizenship rules.

@mpjgregoire Look on the bright side: the people claiming their Canadian citizenship will be the smartest ones. A net benefit to your, or rather our, demographic profile.

@bosak Could be. This law might have quite positive effects on net. Or maybe we'll have thousands of sick Americans crowding our ERs. Or maybe basically nothing will happen.

It seems that at a stroke we've increased the number of Canadian citizens by 25%, and become a country with 20% of its citizens living abroad. And yet I don't remember any serious discussions of this bill, despite its enormous ramifications.
