Does anyone know of a good self-hosted Kanban board and/or project management software that works as similar to Jira as possible?

I know my question is going to make someone mad, but I just don't want to switch context way too much when managing my personal projects.

Something similar to Trello is also acceptable.

I currently use Kanboard, but the interface is way too limited. I understand their choices, but I would like something more rich/responsive/automated.

#HomeLab #SelfHosted #Jira #Kanban @homelab

@badnetmask I've been using Obsidian.
@majorlinux
But since Obsidian is a note taking app, I understand to have a Kanban board it needs a plugin. How does that match to Jira or Trello in similar functionality and workflow?

@badnetmask I've been using it as a basic Kanban.

But, with Obisidian, you can wikilink notes that have additional context if you need them.

@majorlinux
Well. I already have basic Kanban. I need something more elaborate. Thanks.
@badnetmask I used https://taiga.io/ a while ago, it seemed pretty comprehensive and familiar enough coming from Jira.
Taiga: Your opensource agile project management software

@stephen
Ok, that was on my list to review when I initially chose Kanboard. I don't remember why it was put aside. Maybe I need to look at it again. Thanks!
@stephen @badnetmask we actively use Taiga for a development project, not all the bells and whistles of Jira but more than enough
@mkoek @stephen
That's good feedback, thanks!
@badnetmask @homelab I use Kan.Bn (https://kan.bn) and I love it!

@ojs
Someone else suggested that one as well. It's on my list. Thanks!
@badnetmask will be paying attention to this thread cuz I want to know too. I use vikunja for my to do list and it has a kanban board and some task management stuff but Im not sure it's a full jira replacement
@Shenanigans
I don't necessarily need a full Jira replacement, in terms of functionality. I just would like to have a similar interface, so I don't have to break my brain with a wildly different workflow when dealing with personal projects.
@badnetmask vikunja might suit you well then!

The Nextcloud App Store - Upload your apps and install new apps onto your Nextcloud

@jordisalvia @renata
Ah yeah. I forgot to add that note to my original post: NextCloud is not on the books for me. Sorry. But thanks for commenting anyway.
@badnetmask @homelab I've enjoyed Kanboard!
@alcinnz
It's not bad. I just outgrew it. 😄

@badnetmask @homelab There's fizzy from Rails developers (I haven't tested, and I don't like them much, but it is an option)

I also heard about Taskcafé, but again, I haven't used it either.

@eletrotupi
Fizzy looks interesting in terms of features, but I'm a little concerned about the team behind it, due to their project track record with Basecamp and Hey. Also the licensing is weird, to say the least.

Taskcafe development seems to be stopped in 2021, so that's not an option.

Thanks for the comment though.

@badnetmask Yeah, 37 Signals is, uh, complicated to say the least

Lemme know if you do find something, I've been looking for something for a while, still stuck with pen & paper and obsidian notes for now

@AAMfP
I want more features, not less. 😄

But this does look like a very cool project anyway. Thanks!

@badnetmask @homelab I can recommend iceScrum. I've only used the cloud version, but it's perfect for personal projects.

@richarddegenne
I can't find any references to their source code in the documentation. I searched via Google, found some GitHub repo, but it seems like a ghost town. Really weird. Thanks for the pointer anyway.

@badnetmask never used jira or trello really so not sure it's exactly what you're after, but vikunja does kanban and so on and they list a comparison with trello on their site so i guess they're aiming for a similar target.

they have a demo instance to try it out if you like, see if it meets your needs and is similar enough to what you're used to:

https://vikunja.io/

Vikunja: The task manager you actually own

Vikunja is open-source task management you can self-host. Lists, Kanban, Gantt, and more — on your server or ours. Made and hosted in the EU.

@picard
Someone else already mentioned that, so it's on my list to investigate. Thanks.
@badnetmask @homelab I've had good luck with Planka. Moved to it from Trello and was pretty seamless. I use the Docker images. https://github.com/plankanban/planka

@badnetmask @homelab Taiga is another open source and good alternative:

I also heard about Plane, but didn't test it yet

@appsinet
Taiga has been suggested multiple times, which is interesting.

Both are on my list to investigate. Thanks.

@badnetmask @homelab planka does this iirc
@ay
It looks interesting, but the license is weird. I'll take a look anyway. Thanks.
All my experiences with self hosted project management software is they all suck.

For all the hate Jira gets, I think it's entirely unjustified and probably comes from unskilled Jira administrators. Jira is kind of a Project Management operating system, and it's hard to make it as flexible and reliable.

I've tried Redmine and the GitLab open source version but they really aren't very good.

@homelab @badnetmask

@ulveon
Even though I agree with most of what you said, I'm not paying Jira for personal projects. So I'll do some research and choose the "least bad" option. 😄

I'll take a look at Redmine. Thanks.

@badnetmask that's fair. Jira has a free tier but if you want to self-host,I don't know anything better than Redmine. But Redmine is really bad, it's tragic.
@ulveon
Well, I've got lots of other suggestions. I'm sure I'll find something good enough.
@badnetmask do keep us updated with your findings!
@badnetmask there is Plane, if you want Jira experience: https://plane.so/. And there is Kan.bn for simplicity, like Trello: https://kan.bn/
