I just figured out why I hate the last Pirates of the Carribean movie.

1. Other than Jack, the main characters have all moved on. My investment in the story and stakes is way lower as a result.

2. The CGI fucking sucks. It looks worse than the first movie despite coming almost 15 years later.

@krutonium CGI in general has been getting worse, i feel. There are a few movie which do it well, but all in all i have not been impressed by much in the last 10 years.

@catraxx It can still be done well, the problem is that it's cheap enough to do *okay* now that it's hard to convince execs that no, that shop down the road charging 1/4 as much isnt good enough.

Also I may be mistaken but iirc the first 3 movies, for all the CGI, did do a decent amount of practical.

@krutonium this sounds like literally every product ever lately
@krutonium @catraxx Budget has been cut because it is a "standard" of modern movies now.
they don't want to impress they want "mass produced" stuff to get it cheap.
@Erpel @catraxx Theyre going to really regret that when people stop watching them because they're bad...

@Erpel @catraxx Like honestly I was SO excited for a new pirates movie. I was so incredibly happy.

And then they went and just made what by modern definition we would call slop.

@catraxx @krutonium all those streaming service are pushing hard in that direction. there are too many competitors in the market right now. so they try to cut cost wherever they can, because besides which movies/series are available also the cost is a big factor. I know of nobody that has more than 2 or maybe 3 streaming services, so there is a fight over who can get cheapest and get away with it.

Netflix's bullshit "dubber must gives us all their rights for AI training" is just the same bullshit. make it cheap make it fast. Shareholder wants their sweet revenue.

(Like everywhere in capitalistic hellscape)

@Erpel @catraxx

I subscribe to 0 services. I use Plex; with Plex Pass - But it's a very old lifetime license lol.

If they're not going to make it worth my time to watch new stuff, I'm going to go buy used DVD's and Blurays, and rip those.

@catraxx @Erpel Exactly.

@catraxx @Erpel The worst thing you can do is disrespect the users time. They only have so much.

And I hate it when they do, except when it's intentional, but like, I'm told up front. My Summer Car is a game that does exactly that, but it's incredibly upfront about it. The trailer literally says "This is not a fun game"

@catraxx @krutonium don't forget that movies, by definition nowadays, don't want to get you too attached.
to the franchise, yes, but not to a single movie.
consume it, move on to the next thing we can sell you.

there is a reason we get the 25th Marvel movie, or the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean, or the 12th series of Star wars on Disney+

@Erpel @catraxx Can we go back to the old ways of making movies and maybe make seasons of TV with 24-30 episodes again?

Really fucking tired of 10 episode seasons. It's not enough time.

@krutonium @Erpel I think we need to go back a bit further, to sometime around the french revolution ....
@catraxx @Erpel You know, beheading media executives isn't the worst idea I've heard. Not the best, but not the worst.
@krutonium @Erpel I mean, have we tried it yet? Even Studio Ghibli felt like cutting off heads when they saw the american cut of Princess Mononoke.

@catraxx @Erpel Did you hear about English and Japanese Twitter Colliding semi-recently?

Apparently the Japanese people found out what American companies were doing to Anime and went from "Do not pirate our anime" to "Holy Fuck, Download it that's awful"

Says a lot.

@krutonium @Erpel 100% Ghibli made sure they could never do that shit ever again.
@krutonium @catraxx what did the US do to Princess Mononoko? (It was my first Ghibli movie y so it is special to me.)
The Time Studio Ghibli Stood Up To Harvey Weinstein With A Katana

Among the many things for which former Hollywood mogul and convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein was notorious for was re-editing movies as he saw fit, earning the nickname “Harvey Scissorhands.” But when Weinstein was handling Princess Mononoke’s US release, Studio Ghibli wouldn’t be bullied and sent Weinstein a samurai…
