I know I've seen movies that are better than the books they are based on, and that most people would agree with that, but I can never seem to bring an example to mind.

Well: The Bourne Identity.

I quite like this movie and its two sequels. I also read the books (at least some of them) back in the 80s & 90s as a much younger person. I tried going back and reading the first book (by Eric Lustbader) after I was a grow-ass adult and... this movie is better than the book. So much better. Even if this movie sucked in various ways it would be better than the book.

@guyjantic
Fight Club the film was also better than the book, even the author agrees.
@FritzAdalis That's really interesting. I don't have an opinion, having experience with both. The film was really good. The book clarified some important things (especially at the end), but the movie was just great.

@guyjantic
The book had a more realistic (and likely less palatable) goal (destroying knowledge vs. destroying debt) and iirc the prison scene at the end was important.

However replacing 'I want to have your abortion' with 'I haven't been fucked like that since grade school' at the insistence of the censors is genius.
