There is a tree in my front yard which is surrounded by daffodils. We call them "Grandma's daffodils", though she has been gone since 2003. They were required to be blooming in time for Easter every year. So far, they have never failed, although some years they were only partially blooming, and some years they were slightly past their best. But one way or another, we have had daffodils for Easter.

So today, Ash Wednesday, we are still surrounded by snow. Over 100 inches this winter. This past weekend, we had a thaw, and snow began to melt, and we got our hopes up. But today, we had wet sleety snow falling again.

This is a picture of the daffodils. You can't see them, but they are under there. They will be blooming by Easter, because Grandma requires them to. I will put this picture up as the "Before" scene. Follow this thread over the next six weeks, and you will see Grandma's daffodils!

Today is Easter, and *one* of Grandma's daffodils has bloomed! Whew, just made it on time! When I look back at the start of this 'daffodil watch' thread, and see the picture of the deep snow on Ash Wednesday, having even this one daffodil today is wonderful. Especially since Easter was so early this year, and the snow lingered so long.

The daffodils had originally been planted years ago around the front yard tree, particularly where Grandma could see them from the window over the kitchen sink, so we always called them "Grandma's daffodils". Grandma was born on April 4, 1916, so yesterday would have been her 110th birthday. She died on Good Friday in 2003 at age 87. The daffodils had bloomed by Good Friday that year, and I had brought in a bunch to put in a vase on the kitchen table for her to look at, not knowing they were to be part of her last day with us.

There has been a lot of dark stuff happening in the world this spring, so having at least one of the daffodils show up in time for Easter is a spirit-lifter and a reminder of hope.
