Anyone here know any good places to discover metal I might like? Apple Music used to be this but I'm likely going to pull away from it since it's not cross-platform and the Windows app is pretty bad.

I've gotten into atmoblack lately thanks to a friend, but I want to discover metal I like in my own terms. I know there's Spotify artist/song radios and Rate Your Music, the latter I really like since its algorithm is very obviously and aggressively human-curated. Just wanna know if there's anywhere else I can look towards. Maybe Metal-Archives but IDK if I'd fit in there.

@Flaky oh btw this song is not atmoblack, but from an atmoblack artist

@Flaky I’ve moved from Spotify and Apple Music to Bandcamp.
If you are willing to put up with zero suggested music, it’s not a bad place to be.
The app is clunky and doesn’t work amazingly, but you can integrate it into a Lyrion server for a better experience.

Kind of like Mastodon, to find new music, look up stuff you are interested in, or find bands you already like, then follow (or look at) profiles that have bought the album.
I’ve found some EPIC music there and almost every find has been from exploring like that.

Perhaps the best part is that it’s not monthly. You buy the albums you like, but you can otherwise stream and listen to whatever. Just know it’ll nag you to buy the album or song if you’ve listened to it more than twice. Which is fair.

If you’re into physical media, it makes getting it way easier, because you can pay a little extra and get merch from bands while buying the digital album.
Oh, and there are loads of free or inexpensive albums. I usually try and tip when I get them anyhow

@RanuRat Oh I use Bandcamp all the time, I'll have to properly check artists' recs out when I'm looking at metal bands there. Tags as well.

(FWIW I get Spotify for free so cost there isn't an issue :P )

@Flaky @RanuRat I second bandcamp. Just add a few metal tags you are interested in and your timeline thingy will be full of albums and bands
@Flaky actual advice: get a lastfm
@treehatesorc I got one! I never think to use it for recommendations though I should
