RE: https://fosstodon.org/@xmpp/116351867577725652

While I don’t use #XMPP systems any more, I am delighted to see all the activity that is happening within the ecosystem!

I was an early user of jabber.org (in the early 2000’s?) and continued to use it until it just got so overrun by spam that it was useless for me. Simultaneously, other places that had been using XMPP systems were all moving to Slack or similar messengers, particularly as independent clients were struggling.

But I have always like the ideas of XMPP… I wish the community well

@danyork

For me it was the other way around. While I had (and still have) an old #Jabber account at @jabberdotorg, I didn't get used to messengers. I wasn't much on IRC and never used ICQ, Slack, or Whatsapp. But since ≈ 2014 (yes, late to the party), I use #XMPP a lot. Result of midlife crisis?

@danyork I fired up my XMPP server back in December after having mothballed it a few years ago. It lit right back up as though nothing had happened. I've been enjoying tinkering with it again.
@danyork I understand there has been a lot of work on addressing spam. https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0377.html
XEP-0377: Blocking Command Reports

@jjrh Great to know! At the end of my usage, my jabber dot org account had become completely useless!
