I miss the days of things like Trillian. If you're unfamilar, Trillian was a Windows program that had AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ, Yahoo... and I don't remember what else, all logged in to one IM program and one big buddy list. Once all your accounts were logged in, it was seamless.

Yes, I'm aware of Pidgin. No, it doesn't fucking work.
I'd want DeltaChat, Telegram (for now), Matrix, and XMPP.

@hellomiakoda Facebook and other mammoth platforms first killing off interoperability, then fighting any regulatory attempt at interoperability... this has not made the world a better place. I miss Trillian, too. I think I used Pidgin for a while, too, but both are broken by corporate social media platforms actively locking all their users into the walled gardens.
@guyjantic I've been reverting back to the older ways I used to interact with computers. IRC stiill has servers with people on them! I took my notes out of Google, and out of things like Evernote ages ago, and they're now folders of markdown files. Turns out, there's a lot of cool shit I can do when my notes are just markdown files! Plus, I can read my notes even sitting at my server's terminal only interface. I've also been progressively securing my shit.
@guyjantic I've been considering going FDE. I don't like FDE, as it makes remotely booting a computer impossible, but I'm not completely confident an encrypted partition where I store sensitive documents is going to cut it anymore.
@guyjantic My phone is definitely FDE. Has been since I started carrying it. (It was unencrypted while I was waiting for software fixes, but it had none of my data on it then, and it didn't leave the house aside from an occasional testing session) That's the device that needs it most. It's what authorities want to get their hands on most, and it's the most stealable, and most likely to get lost.
@hellomiakoda I miss it too. Closest now is Beeper. But yeah, Trillian was better.
@akrabu Beeper? I haven't heard of this one.

Trillian was amazing. I loved using that. I didn't even know who was on what, I could just talk to them.
