goob morning. it's a new dawn

wanna know how many times I was asked to install AI, use #copilot , sign in to my online account, or have my stuff stored on some cloud infrastructure by default?

✨ ZERO TIMES ✨ (the way it should be)

(yes there are still some issues - you will note not all apps have an icon in the panel 😂 there's a bug that means currently no shortcuts that use Tab can be assigned to anything, but hey.)

#Cosmic is "beautiful,* I am sure I will be able to unlearn all the #Gnome related tweaks I'd acquired over the years and that no longer work at some point. 😁

My desktop has not sounded like it's a helicopter wanting to lift off even once, which was a thing it did at least every couple days on Windows (sometimes multiple times a day)... when I wasn't doing much.

Hot tip: Nautilus is still better than Cosmic Files. 🙊

@robyn
Hello! That's a good looking desktop. Been eyeing the Cosmic desktop project. I just got on the Linux bandwagon recently (after a brief dalliance some years ago) and would love to make the move permanent this time round. If you've used other distros, could you please share your opinion on your favorites? I currently use ZorinOS and am considering installing Linux on my laptop too.

@presentpriority
I just tested out cosmic on opensuse this week as well.

It is very snappy and light weight but is definitely still maturing. I went back to a KDE Plasma 6 desktop pretty quickly.

I've been using opensuse for decades and would highly recommend it.

Ubuntu and its derivatives (like zorin and Pop) have great community support.

It's always fun to try out a different distro through a live boot usb.

https://distrowatch.com/ is an amazing resource

@Trussell @robyn Hi Nick! Thank you for sharing your opinions. I'll check out DistroWatch, but a cursory glance at the top downloads seem to show the usual suspects with Zorin OS climbing up. Cachy and elementary have also been recommended to me, but I was also told that I shouldn't go the Arch Linux route just yet. It's certainly a fun experience to distro hop and try out a few OS' but I am trying to resist going down that rabbit hole 😄. I will look into openSUSE too.

Hi! If you're the kind to adjust your system juuuuust the way you like it, expect some futzing with PopOS 24.04 Cosmic - a lot of the trusty GNOME tools don't work here (and there's less community support because it's so new). It is snazzy and fast though.

For a daily driver w/ more support & history I'd maybe recommend Mint Cinnamon? Or other Debian/Ubuntu derivatives that are more GNOME-y.

You probably already know of https://distrosea.com/, but just in case. :)

@robyn @Trussell Ah, so I'll stick to either Mint or ZorinOS then. I'm told Mint is more customizable and better drivers, so maybe I'll give that a shot.
And no, I did not know about distrosea! Thank you so much for sharing that.
@robyn @pop_os_official yessssssssssss

@robyn @pop_os_official wait, it's Saturday morning! Wasn't this OS migration supposed to be a long weekend project?! Whatever shall you do with all the remaining time??

*slides over a copy of the Steam Linux client while studiously avoiding eye contact*

oh WHATEVER shall you do

@gnomon

oh you mean this one? 😃 I did try out Balatro for shits & giggles, it worked flawlessly.

(there's still a lot to do, system-wise. most apps are installed, but some aren't logged in, Syncthing is in a half-baked state, screenshots are **terrible** atm as flatpaks are not super supported for drag & drop and custom keyboard shortcuts,.... so I don't think I'll be bored just yet 😂 )
