never doubt that people can grow

on the phone with my formerly Libertarian brother yesterday, he told me a story about going to small claims court with one of his wife's post-docs, a Pakistani woman, to make sure she was treated fairly there

and described it as "using my white male privilege for good"

something he would neither have done nor articulated 20 years ago

@sarae Awareness is spreading like wildfire. The flames of revolution are roaring. 💪🖖

@sarae

That highlights to me how it's very useful to give people actions that they can take.

Lots of people seem to bring an attitude of "you have white male privilege, you should feel bad about that". But "you have a higher level of privilege due your race and gender. Ideally everyone would have that level, but in the meantime you can use yours to help others".

Offer people an opportunity to help others, or an opportunity to feel bad. Guess which one they'll prefer?

@jztusk well, I think in this case he identified the need and moved to meet it

IDK that it's anyone else's job to task white people, but we definitely need to be thoughtful about how and when we participate, and try to make useful offers

@sarae

I'm former libertarian, converted by my mom's final medical bills and helping care for my disabled sister and nephew into a full on social democrat UBI supporting big old liberal

@darwinwoodka in my brother's case I think it was a mix of years of the rest of the family rolling our eyes at him

multiple combat deployments to a stunningly pointless series of armed conflicts

and falling for a brilliant Mexican-American woman, which meant seeing America from a completely different perspective

@sarae Thank you for sharing these moments too.
