Do I have anyone from #Newfoundland or #NovaScotia on here? We're planning a vacation in June and want to know what we shouldn't miss while there.
@ve4grm Nova Scotia here, depends what kind of stuff you are into I guess. Burntcoathead park is cool if you want to be impressed by the tides of fundy
@squibbles Oooh, Fundy is a good shout. We're planning around the iceberg festival in Newfoundland, but interested in any recommendations of places you'd take visitors to. Especially around Halifax, but we'll have a car to go further.
@ve4grm Peggy's Cove is the Nova Scotia classic lighthouse on the rocks. Wolfville is a cute little town in the Annapolis Valley, it has a nice farmers market on Saturday mornings. NS has lots of little sights that don't take too long to individually with a bunch of driving in between
@squibbles Peggy's Cove should definitely be on the list! And yeah, a bunch of little places we drive between is what we expect.

@ve4grm those are both huge areas!

joggins is pretty cool; it's a UNESCO world heritage site, free to walk around at but they have paid tours that provide valuable context. lots of fossils, unique cliffs

@matt Yeah, I know, it's a big area. The one thing we know we're doing is iceberg alley, but we want to explore both provinces a bit and have a couple weeks to do so. Joggins is a good shout - historical is a draw for sure.

@ve4grm Newfoundland is best land.

June is usually warm, but can turn cold quick. We had a dusting of snow last year on the 27th.

Where best to go depends on which side of the island you land on. There are a few radio history spots on the east side, if that is your jam.

@CowMan No worries about weather - we're from Manitoba so we can deal with it. We're definitely hitting iceberg alley for a bit, but will also be down in St John's as well. Radio history sounds interesting (as you can probably guess from my handle) - where do you recommend?

@ve4grm
Signal Hill (there is a station there sometimes, VO1AA), terminus for Marconi's transatlantic test [St. John's]

Admiralty House, Mt. Pearl - WW1 listening post turned museum

Cape Race - lighthouse, first transatlantic contact station in the 1900s, thus Titanic traffic, bit of a hike

Hearts Content - 1st transatlantic telegraph station

@ve4grm Little tidbit, on the AM dial, there are two stations additionally which hold the old Nfld prefix. VOCM and VOAR. Rest are Cxxx.

June is tail end of icebergs, hopefully you see many, and big, and close to shore! :)

@CowMan Awesome stuff, thanks!
We were judging iceberg season based on the festival in St. Anthony, so hopefully it's active enough in early June.
@ve4grm I'm only married into honorary Newfoundlander status but I've been there a couple of times and have a lot of family there. 😁
@SJohnRoss Fair enough! Anything you or the spouse would say not to miss?

@ve4grm Big fan of the coastal fun, so get on a whale-watching boat to groove with the whales, groove with the dolphins who'll swim alongside, and truly, deeply reflect on the smell of thousands of adorable puffins pooping on the same rock. πŸ˜†

If you're a fan of shows like Republic of Doyle or Son of a Critch it's cool to poke around town (St. John's) at familiar locations. Can't watch either without my wife reminiscing about every place the shows go!

@SJohnRoss We never got into those shows, unfortunately. But we love a lot of Nfld comedians and music, so we'll be poking around for shows.
@ve4grm And while you're there, find a friendly bar or somesuch where they might screech you in, let you kiss the cod. It's not as naughty as it sounds.
@SJohnRoss
Haha, we're familiar with the practice. Haven't decided yet if I'm brave enough, but it'll probably happen lol.
@ve4grm The cod is your friend. The screech, however, is not. πŸ˜‚
@ve4grm @mayintoronto fyi: food prices are highest in NS 🫀:

@ve4grm I’m not from there but I’m familiar. Cape Breton is on your must see list.
@c_dan4th It's 100% on the list, yeah!
@ve4grm The Bell museum in Bras d'Or is worth a look.
@Son_of_a_George Ooh, interesting! Thanks!
@ve4grm If I picked one spot it would be Cape Breton. Stunning scenery - Cheticamp leads to the national park. NS has stunning beaches everywhere. Good luck!
@SCampbell A fair suggestion! Thanks!
@ve4grm Martinique - favourite beach close to Halifax
@ve4grm King of Donair in Halifax. You'll either love it or hate it!
