Good representation of the inside of my brain

Edit - the drummer - https://mastodon.art/@liebach/116340007790020165

@TheBreadmonkey my brain today, most definitely😁
@mothninja @TheBreadmonkey
He reminds me of the "Born to Be Alive"
Video dude.

@TheBreadmonkey

As a former drummer... can relate

@Anomnomnomaly @TheBreadmonkey Former drummer? I thought drummers were like Marines: once you're one, you're always one.
@TheBreadmonkey I am a drummer and I can confirm that if you start to think about what you're doing in any sort of detail it all rapidly falls to pieces
@pikesley @TheBreadmonkey Ex-drummer (is anyone ever really an ex-drummer?) - can confirm. Drumming is like that bumblebee myth about flying - it's only possible because nobody has told us we can't.

@GlasWolf

Was my experience. I drummed because nobody told me I couldn’t. And I worshiped Buddy Rich. His big band was awesome (using the word properly).

@pikesley @TheBreadmonkey

years ago read about a neuroimaging study done on drummers and basically, y’all rewire your brains in ways that kinda obliterate that whole “left brain vs right brain” shtick:

“Neuroscience and Music: Insights from Drummers’ Brains”
Psychology Today https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-asymmetric-brain/201912/neuroscience-and-music-insights-drummers-brains

you know, seeing how primates use their limbs, maybe it’s an evolutionary skill we forgot on our way to being humans?

anyways, to me drummers brains are just bananas.

Neuroscience and Music: Insights from Drummers’ Brains

Parents might not be happy if their kids pick up the drums, but a new study shows that playing the drums has a profound effect on the brain.

@blogdiva my partner and best friend are both drummers, and my best friend recently realised that all of her closest friends (5/6 folk) have partners who are also drummers lol, there is definitely something interesting about them imo 🤣
@sue @blogdiva Muppet character “Animal” was a reasonably accurate depiction of the type, it turns out.
@cmdrmoto @blogdiva can confirm after almost 25 years of being driven to distraction by this

@blogdiva @DziadekMick @GlasWolf @pikesley @TheBreadmonkey Re: "to me drummers brains are just bananas"

Well, I'm a drummer and I can assure that my brain isn't just bananas - there are other fruit-like substances in there, too.

I also kind of disagree about not thinking - just that it's thinking more in sounds and sensations, and, ideally, not in words at all. Words in your head mess up the flow.

@GlasWolf @pikesley @TheBreadmonkey I assume it's like the way you can't do your signature if you think too hard about it

@pikesley @TheBreadmonkey I'm not a real drummer; I'm just part of the drumming group for our handball team. Our task is to play rhythms that the spectators can clap along to. We have several different rhythms for attacking, defending, cheering on our team and celebrating victory, ...

Once the lead drummer starts playing, my hands know exactly what to play. And while my hands do their job, I watch the game without even thinking about my hands.

Rhapsody On A Theme Of Imposter Syndrome

@TheBreadmonkey Even better if I imagine your brain is saying "Ben! Ben!" instead of "Boom! Bam!"
@TheBreadmonkey but sometimes drummers have to read the music. I can't sight read - it's definitely an issue!
@TheBreadmonkey That drummer is https://www.youtube.com/@ElEsteparioSiberiano, it is a very entertaining channel.

@liebach enlightening and enjoyable, means even more if you’ve ever hear Tool or APC live.
@liebach @cobalt123 his band is really good as well IMHO
@TheBreadmonkey reminds me the line from Top Gun - “if you think - you’re dead” - or in this case, “if you think - you’re coming in late”

@TheBreadmonkey

Drummer no brain! Never brain! 😂

@TheBreadmonkey
Unless you're the drummer of Meshuggah- then it's all brain *and* pain! 😅

@TheBreadmonkey You haven't seen the video where Jorge (also known as El Estapario Siberiano) is playing a different time signature AND a different tempo with each limb, and still ends it on the one!
@TheBreadmonkey hehehe this going straight to my wife
@TheBreadmonkey bip, bop, bip, bop, crash, crash - yep sounds like my brain too.
@TheBreadmonkey I'm just here for the beats, the rum, and the ass
@TeflonTrout @TheBreadmonkey So you’re in the Royal Navy?
@michaelgemar @TheBreadmonkey It was my own fault- a proper gentleman would have noticed the lack of clarity as to who's ass it was going, as it were, to be in the contract
@TeflonTrout @TheBreadmonkey As they say, rum, sodomy, and the lash are what made the Royal Navy.
@TheBreadmonkey the left side/right side split is the trickier thing than the up/down split in my limited experience. Some drummers sing at the same time, of course
@TheBreadmonkey
boots n cats n boots n cats n
@TheBreadmonkey Jorge! Love it when he does the polyrhythm videos

@oliver_schafeld @blogdiva I’m like Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle
@TheBreadmonkey Yep, this applies to lots of learned skills. You stop thinking after a while. Everyone should realise this! I can name at least four that I happen to have: playing piano, solving Rubik's cube, driving a car, juggling. This is what brains do... why does it surprise anyone? Of course, some people take it to greater heights than usual :)

@macronencer @TheBreadmonkey
A Swing dance teacher once told me a Zen quote:
"Enter through form. Exit from form."

But I can't find a source online, so maybe he just made it up himself.

(The context was a lesson on musicality.)

@mlazz @TheBreadmonkey Made up or not, it sounds right!
@macronencer @TheBreadmonkey automaticity and motor memory ;)
And different people take different paths.
I smiled a lot watching that.
@TheBreadmonkey Jugglers have joined the chat.
@markstos @TheBreadmonkey are there juggler drummers? 🤔
@viq @TheBreadmonkey I’ve drummed while juggling. It wasn’t pretty.
@markstos @viq @TheBreadmonkey were valuable lessons learned, or valuables damaged, or both?
@viq @markstos @TheBreadmonkey The Flying Karamazov Brothers did a routine.

@TheBreadmonkey
My sons drum teacher says when he plays his lessions, he's concentrated in doing precise hits at first. And then there is this shutter... it goes through him like a wave and suddenly he just starts playing as if his brain completely shut down and the body took over.

I agree: Good drummer no brain. Never brain.
