As a former drummer... can relate
Was my experience. I drummed because nobody told me I couldn’t. And I worshiped Buddy Rich. His big band was awesome (using the word properly).
years ago read about a neuroimaging study done on drummers and basically, y’all rewire your brains in ways that kinda obliterate that whole “left brain vs right brain” shtick:
“Neuroscience and Music: Insights from Drummers’ Brains”
Psychology Today https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-asymmetric-brain/201912/neuroscience-and-music-insights-drummers-brains
you know, seeing how primates use their limbs, maybe it’s an evolutionary skill we forgot on our way to being humans?
anyways, to me drummers brains are just bananas.

oh that study is so cool, thank you!

Well, I'm a drummer and I can assure that my brain isn't just bananas - there are other fruit-like substances in there, too.
I also kind of disagree about not thinking - just that it's thinking more in sounds and sensations, and, ideally, not in words at all. Words in your head mess up the flow.

I mean, yes?

This!
@pikesley @TheBreadmonkey I'm not a real drummer; I'm just part of the drumming group for our handball team. Our task is to play rhythms that the spectators can clap along to. We have several different rhythms for attacking, defending, cheering on our team and celebrating victory, ...
Once the lead drummer starts playing, my hands know exactly what to play. And while my hands do their job, I watch the game without even thinking about my hands.
I once wrote a tangentially-related blogpost

Drummer no brain! Never brain! 😂
@TheBreadmonkey
Unless you're the drummer of Meshuggah- then it's all brain *and* pain! 😅

We learned that in children's TV 😁🥁

@macronencer @TheBreadmonkey
A Swing dance teacher once told me a Zen quote:
"Enter through form. Exit from form."
But I can't find a source online, so maybe he just made it up himself.
(The context was a lesson on musicality.)
@TheBreadmonkey
My sons drum teacher says when he plays his lessions, he's concentrated in doing precise hits at first. And then there is this shutter... it goes through him like a wave and suddenly he just starts playing as if his brain completely shut down and the body took over.
I agree: Good drummer no brain. Never brain.
Not just drumming.
