With the turn to the hard right as Trump was elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2024, corporate media have been eager to push a narrative of religious revival among the young, especially among young men. At the same time, the media quickly dropped discussion of the number of people who began leaving mainline and evangelical churches following Trump's election in 2016.

The Gen Z Christian Revival That Wasn’t

Some pastors and politicians claim that a Christian revival is afoot among young Americans. Nationwide data tell a different story.

The Atlantic

It's becoming increasingly apparent that the numbers backing up the assertion of religious revival among the young in both the US and Europe/UK are being cooked — and that no such revival is actually occurring. Someone somewhere is paying for "research" and dubious polling that the media then swallow uncritically to church out breathless articles about how GenZ is turning to God.

Luis Parrales takes a look at what we can say with relative certainty about the purported religious revival among the young in the US: to the extent that it's occurring, it's highly localized. And it's not the sweeping revival the media are portraying it to be.

"To treat this stabilization [in numbers of those leaving churches] as a revival overlooks that younger Americans are the least religious age group by many metrics."

"Members of Gen Z are less likely than people in other generations to profess belief in God without doubts, for example, according to the 2024 General Social Survey. Gen Zers are also the least likely to attend religious services regularly and the most likely to never attend them. ... For every Catholic convert, for example, roughly eight Catholics leave the faith."

Statistician Ryan Burge shows us the numbers in graphic form: the numbers tell us that formal religious membership in the US has been declining generationally for decades now.
