Almost Two-Thirds of Europeans Back Replacing US Tech, Poll Finds

EU leaders are pursuing digital sovereignty plans to reduce the 27-country bloc’s dependence on the United States, writes Mark Scott.

@Karlitschek I just hope against hope the conversation manages "open source and interop over monopolistic hegemony" and doesnt drift into "non-american momopolistic hegemony over american monopolistic hegemony"
@Karlitschek it's quite interesting that if you ignore "don't knows", all of the surveyed countries are about the same - it's just that in Poland, there's a lot more "don't knows" in general [which, honestly, might just be greater honesty!]

@Karlitschek

And how many of these Two-Thirds will replace e.g. Microsoft Windows with Linux in the next two months?
Wishful thinking meets laziness.

@_RyekDarkener_ @Karlitschek I used to try to convince people they're wasting their time with windows and that Linux is so much better and easy to use but after wasting so much time I came to the conclusion that bees don't waste valuable time explaining to flies why honey is better than shit.
@Karlitschek America First will become America Alone.
@Karlitschek Good sentiment. But talk is cheap. Sadly, agency seems to collapse with even the slightest obstacle, as we see with X and WhatsApp, for example.
@Karlitschek one more chick in the armor of American cultural and technical leadership

@Karlitschek
I think the EU should as well.

It seems tech here is garbage that is only here to make $$$$ of you not provide real value.

#enshittification comes to mind.

@Karlitschek

Im curious what fraction of Americans would like to dump Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon.

Also are the answers different if you say american tech vs listing specific US tech companies?

@alienghic @Karlitschek

I've already done so, but I'm a tiny, tiny minority. As far as I can tell, most Americans don't even know that there are alternatives, and even if they do they are so addicted to "convenience" that they can't be bothered to switch. It's kind of insane.

@mlrife @Karlitschek

I'd agree having the ability to move off tech on your own is pretty rare.

I do think the reputations of the different companies aren't the same. I think Microsoft and Facebook are widely despised, but Apple is moderately liked.

I suspect part of the political support for banning teens from social media is due to adults negative feelings about Facebook's various "social" media software.

@Karlitschek

#tRump is taking hits on all sides now.

How Canada can defend itself from Trump, make billions of dollars, and build a new, global, good internet.

@Karlitschek
Should be higher who want to separate from them as well as the U.S. in general.

@Karlitschek

As they should. Tech lock-in only benefits the corpos.

@Karlitschek the other third are just too dumb to know better.
@Karlitschek Europeans are not as good at lobbying EU officials as US tech companies 🙄
