TO Acorn: As rattlesnakes reemerge, local expert stresses awareness

"...“Stay on the path whenever you walk, and if you are in tall grass where you can’t see your shoes, that’s not a good place to be,” Solis said. “If you are wearing Air- Pods or headphones, make sure one ear is open so you can hear your surroundings.” ..."

"...Subject experts don’t go so far as suggesting staying indoors until the end of rattlesnake season, but they do recommend taking simple precautions like staying on wide, well-used trails if you’ll be hiking; avoiding putting hands or feet where you can’t see them and avoiding tall grass or heavy brush...."

As rattlesnakes reemerge, local expert stresses awareness

As rattlesnakes emerge early from winter hibernation across the region, locals are reporting sightings earlier than usual. While most people steer clear of them, animal expert Marco Solis deals daily to safely remove and relocate the reptiles. Not only have sightings been reported and shared multiple times on social media, but three bites were reported in as many weeks recently […]

Thousand Oaks Acorn -

@ai6yr I think those are good standard operating procedures for all wilderness areas. If not for snakes then for ticks or thorny or irritating plants.

Maybe if you don't get bit by anything more serious you just come back with some mild rashes and you learn.

@ai6yr My family was walking the dogs in our center city neighborhood. We heard a noise like a busted sprinkler so I peaked in the bush to check out if I could fix it for them. You guessed it. Big ol rattlesnake. Glad i peaked before i reached in. We are miles from the nearest wild area, but i guess he was enjoying the house mice. We found a giant snake shed a few blocks later. We still avoid that yard.
@ai6yr wow, how very far from common sense in the outdoors have we become?
@MsMerope @ai6yr But I want to take my music EVERYWHERE! Apple tech support needs to fix nature.
@MsMerope @ai6yr Our disconnection from nature and our resources was intentional. Now we see nature as a threat and companies that exploit (mining, oil, timber, water) are seen as less of a threat. Subtle brainwashing has disconnected us from that which sustains us, brings us peace and improves our health.
Shorter Version:
We’re being farmed
@ai6yr
5) Refrain from singing "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake.
6) If you come across a rattlesnake, placate it with the live mice you keep in your fanny pack. --> Run.
Little something for the head.
