Vous le savez peut-ĂȘtre, plus de la moitiĂ© du trafic internet est dĂ©sormais le fait de comptes automatisĂ©s dits robots (« bots »), et la part des « bots IA » (IA comme « Intelligence Artificielle ») croĂźt exponentiellement.

Que font ces derniers ? Ils visitent de maniĂšre massive et automatisĂ©e tous les sites internet sans relĂąche, afin de s’entraĂźner. Dit autrement, ils pillent littĂ©ralement les contenus pour s’en resservir ensuite, au mĂ©pris du droit d’auteur, de la licence d’utilisation et de la volontĂ© des crĂ©ateurs (ainsi que de l’environnement). Pire, ils sollicitent tellement les serveurs internet qu’ils en arrivent Ă  les surcharger.

C’est un comportement voyou qui s’apparente Ă  celui de maliciels (ou « malwares »).

J’ai donc dĂ©cidĂ© de lutter contre, Ă  la fois pour protĂ©ger vos contenus et pour Ă©viter les problĂšmes de performance et de disponibilitĂ© de nos serveurs.

AprÚs une phase de tests et de mise au point sur Lemmy depuis deux semaines, je vais déployer progressivement la solution Anubis dans cet objectif. Celle-ci assure un excellent taux de protection (je vous donnerai des chiffres quand tout sera stabilisé, mais ceux-ci donnent déjà le vertige
)

Ce week-end, je compte protĂ©ger Mastodon avec cette solution. J’étendrai ensuite progressivement Ă  l’ensemble de nos applications dans les semaines qui suivent.

L’impact pour vous ? Si vous utilisez une app (comme sur un smartphone), aucun. Si vous utilisez un navigateur, vous aurez lors de votre premier accĂšs une fenĂȘtre de vĂ©rification qui s’affichera pendant une Ă  deux secondes, puis qui disparaĂźtra automatiquement. Celle-ci ne rĂ©apparaĂźtra pas avant une semaine ou bien si vous changez de mode de connexion (smartphone).

Normalement tout devrait fonctionner comme avant, y compris la visibilitĂ© de vos publications pour les humains, et cela ne devrait pas vous dĂ©ranger. Toutefois, dans certaines configurations « exotiques », il n’est pas impossible qu’une application lĂ©gitime se voie refuser l’accĂšs. Si vous constatez la moindre anomalie, merci de me le signaler !

C’est un jeu du chat et de la souris, et toute la subtilitĂ© consiste Ă  bloquer le trafic indĂ©sirable sans affecter les accĂšs lĂ©gitimes. C’est pourquoi aucune solution n’est parfaite et vous n’aurez pas une protection Ă  100%, mais on bloquera ainsi une grande partie des indĂ©sirables.

Je publierai un billet de blog avec plus de dĂ©tails sur les choix que j’ai faits. J'Ă©vite notamment toute solution tierce intrusive de type Cloudflare, et comme pour le reste tout est dĂ©ployĂ© localement.

C’est dommage d’avoir Ă  en arriver lĂ . Mais l’éthique et la protection de la vie privĂ©e que je promeus m’amĂšne Ă  mettre en place cette protection.

🇬🇧 AI BOT FILTERING

As you may know, more than half of all internet traffic now comes from automated accounts known as “bots,” and the proportion of “AI bots” (AI standing for “Artificial Intelligence”) is growing exponentially.

What do these bots do? They visit every website relentlessly and on a massive, automated scale in order to train themselves. In other words, they literally plunder content to reuse it later, in defiance of copyright laws, user licenses, and the creators’ wishes (as well as the environment). Worse still, they place such a heavy load on web servers that they end up overloading them.

This is rogue behavior similar to that of malware.

I have therefore decided to fight back, both to protect your content and to prevent performance and availability issues with our servers.

After two weeks of testing and fine-tuning on Lemmy, I will gradually roll out the Anubis solution for this purpose. It provides an excellent protection rate (I’ll share the numbers once everything is stabilized, but they’re already mind-boggling
)

This weekend, I plan to protect Mastodon with this solution. I will then gradually extend it to all of our applications in the coming weeks.

How does this affect you? If you’re using an app (such as on a smartphone), there’s no impact. If you’re using a browser, the first time you access, a verification window will appear for one to two seconds and then disappear automatically. It won’t reappear for a week, or unless you switch your connection method (e.g., on a smartphone).

Normally, everything should work as before, including the visibility of your posts to humans, and this shouldn’t bother you. However, in certain “unusual” configurations, it’s not impossible for a legitimate app to be denied access. If you notice any issues, please let me know!

It’s a game of cat and mouse, and the trick is to block unwanted traffic without affecting legitimate access. That’s why no solution is perfect and you won’t have 100% protection, but this will block a large portion of the unwanted traffic.

I’ll post a blog entry with more details on the choices I’ve made. Notably, I avoid any intrusive third-party solution such as Cloudflare, and as for all the rest everything is deployed locally.

It’s a shame to have to resort to this. But the ethics and privacy protection I advocate lead me to implement this safeguard.
