The excuse to talk to relatives in Russia and the occupied territories is less compelling of late. My guess is inertia.

Actually TG is a very flawed by design product that's showing it's age and limitations. But it's very easy to use, and ease of use trumps all in most cases- see: SMS/texting which should never have been born and should have died a long time ago.
