if you have avoided updating an iOS device because of some combination of hating the new UI or age verification nonsense, please be aware that a critical security patch has been back-ported to iOS 18 so you can install just the patch without a full upgrade. SCROLL DOWN on the Updates tab to find it, if it’s available to you.
@0xabad1dea unfortunately too late for most of my devices … “upgrade” my phone to this shite interface because of this vulnerability
@tillgrallert @0xabad1dea Same here. Fucked up a perfectly functional phone. Trying to look on the bright side; it’s going to make it easier to move away from it when it’s time for my next phone (by which time, I hope a Linux phone will be a viable daily-driver).

@0xabad1dea wait a second, I typed that whole paragraph about me being on iOS 17 and instead moving my data and app usage to my GrapheneOS Pixel to not worry about bad features being bundled with security updates...

Then I had a thought: "if they just released iOS 18.7.7, doesn't this mean iOS 18 is now signed again and maybe available via OTA?"

Yes, it does, I will be updating now once I free some space (I only have 2GB free, curse 128GB phones) 😂

@jj @0xabad1dea for some reason, apple pulled signing for 18.7.7 OTA. there's no full IPSW for 18.7.7 either, so recovery isn't possible to that version for most phones; they're only signing 26.4 for most models.

There were 18.7.7 ipsw packages for the iPhone XS/XR and iPad 7? but they've all been pulled...

At least iOS 18 is similar to 17. Feels mildly slower tho... I'll take it vs security issues.

@jessienab @jj @0xabad1dea I'm installing 18.7.7 over 18.7.7 right now. I suppose Apple secretly reissued the update.
@rotopenguin @jj @0xabad1dea indeed I installed 17.x to 18.7.7, perhaps signing was available from device, vs separately using blobsaver (tho it probably does the same with the nonce etc)
@0xabad1dea I'm stuck with the Windows 98 Media Center Edition UI version of iOS :(
@0xabad1dea heads up though, if you’re in the UK, the latest iOS requires age verification https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/03/apple-begins-age-checks-in-the-uk-with-latest-ios-update/
Apple begins age checks in the UK with latest iOS update

Move follows government pressure on smartphone makers to do more to protect children online.

@0xabad1dea As additional context, Folks who were already on 18.7.3 (released Dec 12, 2025) were fully patched against DarkSword and, per docs, 18.7.7 does not address any additional DarkSword vulns.

18.7.7 just makes 18.x available to more devices.

@0xabad1dea I just did this on both my phone and iPad and I feel like I defeated Apple! I waited them out!!
@0xabad1dea I misclicked and now my iPhone 11 is almost bricked :(
