@jcrabapple this is fantastic!
@dasparky @jcrabapple why isn’t this HUGE headline news today in the US. Oh wait. Something something politics today. But seriously this is exciting. I’d read that gene therapy was doing great things and working on this but wow, what a breakthrough!
@jcrabapple has it been cured everywhere else?

@Ghostsheetz @jcrabapple

Read the article.

@ricardoharvin (this was a joke about grammar—specifically, associativity. I came here to post a variant of the same joke: "When was it first cured *outside* of New York?") @Ghostsheetz @jcrabapple

That sickle cell anemia news is remarkable.

I knew of the disease as a genetic problem, I hadn’t realised how much it affects specific ethnic groups (although that makes sense when you think about a genetic disorder)

Now, we need massive investments in healthcare in the countries where the problem is most prevalent

@stufromoz The other thing about sickle cell disease affecting specific ethnic groups is the interaction with malaria
@sabik oh, interesting, I don’t know about that

@jcrabapple finally a chance for billionaires to shine.

"The cure for sickle cell disease now exists.

For a large proportion of the people who need it most, it remains entirely out of reach.

Lyfgenia carries a list price of $3.1 million. Casgevy lists for $2.2 million."

@jcrabapple linked page shows 403 Http error. Probably one of those sites that geofence traffic. (🇩🇪 here)
@jcrabapple Proof that people are still doing great things all this mess.
@jcrabapple

tech is here, but is humanity ? Still a matter of business, life price.

These are not insurance co-pays.
They are the sticker prices for a single treatment.

@jcrabapple

Headline is misleading, considering he had the treatment in 2024 and the article is based on news from 2025. Useful look at racist health disparities though.
