Ordered 8 cubic yards of garden soil that I need to haul from the church parking lot to my backyard because apparently I hate myself.

7 & 8 carts into the job. I’ve got 1 of the big beds more or less done, which is ~1/4 of the total raised bed volume.

Woof.

Carts 9-12.

Got 1 more cart before the rain & lightning started. I guess that’s a wrap for the day.

Not too bad, burned 2,232 calories today!

Picked back up today and did 13 more carts. I took a couple breaks and forgot to resume my #fitiv exercise tracker for a while, so I only recorded ~1300 calories burnt but it’s probably closer to ~2000. Thankfully it wasn’t nearly as warm today, but the soil was heavier thanks to the rain last night.

First 3 beds are full, pending settling and topping off. Time for a #beer!

Final cart for the day, totaling 26 in 2 days. Finished off the first 4 beds, pending settling & topping off.

I am le tired.

Took a detour to build another bed with old wood from our old retaining wall, since I am bound to have soil leftover. Still got some work to do on it, of course.
It’ll be separated from the other beds so it may be a good spot for squash & zucchini (boooo squash bugs!)

Doesn’t look like I did much, but I burnt 2900 calories today so… 🥵

I was running out of time (the soil is in the neighboring church parking lot and tomorrow is arguably their biggest day of the year), so I contracted out a couple neighbor kids to help haul. The big beds are now full up to ~1” from the top, and I built up the new bed some more and added more soil. Need to add more but I’m beat for today. Still a bunch of soil in the parking lot so I need to warn the pastor 😬

@VTDARKSIM I don’t know why the manufacturer puts that sticky plastic on. It took me ages to pull it off my one raised bed (which is now planted with potatoes).

@LyndaDelph it’s come off okay on the few I’ve tried. I just kept it on while I was bumping around them with a metal yard cart so I didn’t scratch them up!

I was very unhappy with that plastic covering on this style of garden bed! It definitely took me some effort to remove. I have another style from the same company that I much prefer and don't have the plastic. The big rolling pots I tried for my citrus only come in this style, though

@VTDARKSIM

Def boooo tro squash bugs...and cucumber beetles.

@VTDARKSIM
We had a bad case if squash bugs one year. We ended up pulling the squash early and bringing the chickens in and, man, that was a successful control mechanism. (Cucumber beetles, however, are a different beast.)

@aosmith16 haven’t grown cucumbers yet so those are an unfamiliar beast. We did squash & zucchini 3 years ago and they feasted on the zucchini plant. Next year we moved to a new bed w/ squash only & bathed it w/ Neem oil; was super healthy but didn’t produce any squash (we think our mosquito spray killed our bees 😢). Last year we tried squash again in the original box & we’re overrun w/ those bugs, despite Neem, & the squash kept rotting prematurely.

Fingers crossed for this year!
