Hmm, getting the high-inflation itch to buy stuff, lol. Even though I generally don't buy anything. #inflation

As in "hmm, maybe I should buy that XYZ I have been thinking about for a couple of years because the price keeps going up"

#inflation

@ai6yr
There's something to that if an item has been on your list for a while.
@ai6yr
That's your stockpiling instinct getting tickled 😲
@ai6yr We should all buy hard drives before they replace gold as a publically traded store of value

@jmcrookston @ai6yr I was just thinking about this yesterday. It's probably just because I'm continuing forward old patterns of use but I wonder what would happen if I couldn't buy disk drives or optical media. It would mean no cold storage.

Imagine a society where all knowledge was on solid state devices that would fade some years after power failure.

I guess redundant SSD raids are fairly safe 😞

@ai6yr I'm feeling that, but about consumables I use regularly but don't always keep spares around (looking with some heavy side eye at my bike tires, which might need to be replaced on this bike in a couple of months).
@SRLevine Yeah, I feel you. Some stuff you don't want to store because they age (ie consumables, bike tires).
@ai6yr The best time for me to build a replacement fileserver was 3 years ago. The 2nd best time is now.

@ai6yr in terms of computer tech I plan on hunkering down with the devices I own until prices come down.

Ha. I hope that will happen before present computing becomes retrocomputing.

@ai6yr I'm using the potential for global manufacturing disruption to get me to stop procrastinating and buy replacements for my partially broken kitchen appliances.
@alienghic
What are you going to do when the power goes out for an extended period?
@ai6yr

@desertsquare @ai6yr

Curse myself for not cleaning my garage enough to have a battery installed?

@desertsquare @ai6yr

As for advice for people without solar panels on their roof, a little while ago I found a video of a Ukrainian talking about what he'd done to survive the daily rolling blackouts in Ukraine.

@alienghic @desertsquare Excellent, this kind of thing is very useful.
@alienghic @desertsquare @ai6yr
Solar + batteries is an amazingly effective hedge against blackouts…
@ai6yr Me, looking at this stack of old, but functional spinning rust drives 😂
