I deleted 3000 words from my thesis today, it was scary but it needed to be done! #PhDLife
@SeaFury those bastards! Using up valuable space that more important words need!

That is a very tough task, so very well done!!!

I'm just catching up on the week.. it looks like it has been a tough one for you

Sending you hugs and gentle encouragement!

@AnnonBudgie Thank you Caz, I am taking it easy - needed.

@SeaFury Well done! There's nothing more painful in thesis writing than pruning a blind alley, or just cutting down a hugely well-researched bit of lit review because actually it is no longer that relevant to your argument.

The examiners would actually prefer a shorter thesis - they don't need proof that you have done tons of work!

@huxley I think mine is going to be on the small size, if they want me to pad it out, I can put the boring stuff back in LOL
@SeaFury don't worry about it, it's the conclusions that matter. Everything else is just telling the story of how you got to the conclusions. As long as the conclusions demonstrate important additions/alterations to the state-of-the-art, and the rest of the thesis supports those conclusions with logical argument, analysis or empirical evidence, then you will be fine.
@huxley Yes, this is what I teach my students about essays. Be critical, be concise, lead the narrative and back it up.

@SeaFury I had to cut a whole chapter of my PhD thesis, a huge amount of work that would have made the thesis stronger. But it would have made it too long and I wouldn't have been able to finish in time. I passed with no corrections anyway. The hard cuts are worth it; part of what they want to see is that you can correctly manage the scope. You got this ๐Ÿ’ช

PS: pretty sure the reason I missed out on a distinction for my MA was that it was too long. Cuts are hard, but worth it.

@Rhube It is hard for me because I have worked in this area for more than 10 years, the PhD was much later, so I have so much expertise. I have to keep to a narrative, what was written did not fit, so I CUT!
@SeaFury As I understand it, this is a lot of what they want to see: that you can channel your understanding into a cohesive and clear longform written argument, without becoming rambling or losing focus. It's an uncommon skill, which is why proving you can do it is so hard ๐Ÿ˜ฃ
