Is it just me or was the general public's reaction to Artemis II launching more like shrugged shoulders than actual excitement?

I slept when it launched (time zones). Now, roughly 6 hours later, the story is barely above the fold on most news websites.

Thoughts on why?

@ShadowZone Hm, maybe it is really b/c of the timezone-difference?
I stayed up and on Fedi there was much action around the launch.
Also in my personal circle there was hype :)
On the German public service news (Tagesschau) it's at the top news spot atm.

Guess a combination of middle of the night (for Europe) + so many other stuff going on in the world and that the launch has been shifted before

@ShadowZone
I wasn't aware of the mission until yesterday. Somehow the news did not reach me in the first place.

So maybe there wasn't enough news coverage before the launch?

I also think a lot of people are currently focused on all the global issues πŸ˜”.

I did watch the launch yesterday night and got goosebumps.

@Xanatos

I think you're right. Artemis 2 is being overshadowed by a lot of negative news.

And probably rightly so. Wars and economic fallout are a lot more impactful on people's lives and thus more newsworthy.

@ShadowZone

@ShadowZone too many bad things that go on in the world? A general distrust in anything from the USA?

I had the same experience. My colleague didn't know about this launch at all before I told him.

@ShadowZone

The main reason is all the shitty news that is hitting most people much harder, but I think a lesser reason is that SLS and Orion are such old designs.

This is just a hunch and I'm no expert, but I briefly worked on Orion testing in 2008 -- and it wasn't a new design then. All my mentors from that time retired years ago.

So this mission feels like we're a teenager driving our parents old minivan. It's safe and it runs, but it's not cool or exciting.
