Remember when they said the internet was going to change the world?

We probably should have asked for more details.

@mmiasma Bad assumption on our part for thinking the internet would improve the world...

@Jason844 There was probably something in the T&Cs that we didn't read. @mmiasma
@mmiasma Ok but it kinda feels like it *didn’t* change the world. These are all of the old problems but intensified.

@griotspeak

I don't disagree with you about it distilling and intensifying some already existing problems but I think it gave rise to some pretty dramatic disinformation that found purchase among the most gullible. The whole "do your own research" crowd that were so much fun to deal with during a pandemic. I don't think we'd have seen that volume of collective behavior pre-internet. But hell, I've been wrong before. 😔

@mmiasma the internet did change the world. Then died, and devolved into what we have today

@polmalvinas

I guess we can file that under "enshitification" *

* Thanks to Corey Doctorow for finding the right word.

@mmiasma

To be a little serious, the internet has changed the world, for better AND worse. I'm not exactly sure what the balance sheet looks like. Trying to compare value between unlike things is devilishly difficult.

It would be nice to jettison the trash. I think there's agreement on what the trash is by people I consider smart, but there's a lot of competition by people with money in the game, and those I don't consider smart to make that realistic :^/
