[1/4] I enjoyed reading your feedback on the importance of the 'Following you' indicator on profiles.

#FeedbackFriday

[2/4] What stood out to me most is the weight this indicator has on making many of you feel safe in the Fediverse. Time can pass, we forget why we followed people, and sometimes things even go wrong.

[3/4] Even after following someone, knowing that account follows you adds a layer of confidence and helps you to make decisions large and small – whether you're pruning your following list, or choosing how to engage with a questionable mention.

[4/4] I'm confident we can reintroduce the 'Follows you' indicator before 4.6, and your feedback also has me curious about a few other areas this badge could be more directly helpful – in your "People I'm following" list, for instance. Rest assured, you've been heard! And thanks again for your collaboration.

One hurdle here is localization & excessive character counts. How necessary is the explicit text 'You follow each other' – would it be sufficient to show 'Follows you' in all cases, including when you're following the person back? This considerably simplifies things and expands where we're able to display the badge.

@stefan @monikavernandes @harvestntech @katherine_montalto @richlv @iwein @fembot @cobalt123 @mtechman @f @ddlyh @nathandyer @iwritelike

@imanijoy But yes, intimately familiar with how localization can mess up an interface, I feel your pain!
@stefan 'Mutuals' is something we had long ago, but it confused some users and was difficult to localize properly!

@imanijoy Yeah, it's a bit of an "internety" term, I suppose.

Plus I know "Mutuals" breaks consistency with "Follows you"/"You are following", and "You are mutuals" is also getting a bit long.

Yeah, that's a tough one, I will defer to others to share their thoughts on this!

Take this with a grain of salt, but what about...

[ ♥️ Mutuals ]
[ 🫂 Mutuals ]

Alright, sorry. I will leave this to experts.

@stefan I like the brevity of that but it presumes a common understanding of the term, which I don't think is universal. Clearly stating it is my preference. ('You follow each other' is also kind of poetic in other ways too. But I digress.)

@imanijoy @monikavernandes @harvestntech @katherine_montalto @richlv @iwein @cobalt123 @mtechman @f @ddlyh @nathandyer @iwritelike

@imanijoy thanks for asking! I guess yes, "Follows you" is fine and anyone can understand. Something like "Mutuals" would maybe be confusing...
@harvestntech thank you! And yes, we're deliberately trying to avoid the ambiguous 'Mutuals'

@[email protected] vote for “follows you”. I really want that option to show up without too much guessing where it would be.

FYI I use Ivory, iPhanpy, and old Mastodon for iPhone only if I have to. I use Mac so it’s the old mastodon desktop.

@imanijoy Big fan of the current iteration because the clarity of it is instantaneous and removes a step (looking to see if you're also following them, in case it's been a while and you need the reminder).

Also a big fan of brevity though and if 'Follows you' allows for better spacial flow it's possibly a good tradeoff.

@stefan @monikavernandes @harvestntech @katherine_montalto @richlv @iwein @cobalt123 @mtechman @f @ddlyh @nathandyer @iwritelike

@imanijoy I think the way it's done in @phanpy is quite nice

@imanijoy

I think 'Follows you' is enough, because directly beneath it would be the follow/unfollow button which acts as a clear indicator of whether I myself follow the person.

@stefan @monikavernandes @harvestntech @katherine_montalto @richlv @iwein @fembot @cobalt123 @mtechman @f @ddlyh @nathandyer

@iwritelike @imanijoy I agree, for the exact same reason. "Follows you" is perfectly sufficient!
