It’s nice to read the reasons and experiences of others with cameras and how it modifies their life and practices.

I find photography both daunting and satisfying, sometimes in …equal measures, and spending time with the new-to-me TL2 camera from 8 years ago has been quite satisfying… and daunting. So that checks out (I’m very circuitous).

Anyway, I love reading posts like this:

The Nikon Zf

In a desperate attempt to spark some enthusiasm for photography, I bought a Nikon Zf. I know, this is not the best approach, but it’s what I did so here we are. I’m jotting down a few quick thoughts and first impressions. (This isn’t a review. Just notes to myself about the camera). Nikon Zf The Zf1 is meant to replace my Leica SL2. The SL2 is a terrific camera, but it’s so big and heavy that I never take it anywhere. With the Zf being smaller and lighter, I figured it would make more sense as an “everyday carry” camera.

@Luke how’s the TL2 working out for you?
@alpower Great! It’s USB-C, 24MP is plenty, the manual lenses are just enough challenge and reward, and it’s such a beautifully designed object to hold. (Blog post soon)
@Luke I’m actually heading up to London next weekend fora non-photography errand and plan on popping to the Leica Gallery/Store for a nose about/check out what they are exhibiting 📷🤓
@alpower let me know how it goes and what you find./pics
@alpower how was your trip to London to see cameras?
@Luke hah 1 year later but thanks for checking! 🙏 It was v nice. Loved the photography and loved trying out the Q3 and Q3 43, but realistically neither are in my price range. Haven’t upgraded camera yet but considering a Sony A7cii and sigma 45 - a poor man’s Q3 43 😅 how’s your TL2 working out?
@alpower @Luke The Leica Q3 43 is a lovely camera (a friend has one). That said, my A7III with a 35mm f2.8 Zeiss has been my go-to for the past few years. I bought the body in 2019, and am surprised that I’ve stuck with it for 6+ years! I’ve been quite happy. But I don’t chase the latest and greatest. (And obviously making @aphera gives me leeway and control).
@nazhamid @Luke I’ve a love/hate relationship editing XTrans files of my XT5, and currently shooting my Canon R8. Tempted by the A7cii because of its size and also openness with other lens manufacturers like Zeiss, Sigma and Viltrox. Wish Canon would open up their mount. You are not the first person who has said to me they like their A7III! I’m definitely Sony curious 🧐
@alpower @Luke I was surprised years ago when Sony suddenly became a serious contender in photography. I was a Nikon person myself and of course, always lusted after a Leica. The Panasonic GF1 was a great one, and then I got into the Sony RX100s. The A7III just hit that sweet spot at the time for being full-frame, cost, 4K video, etc. I’m not sure what I’m missing per se because it’s still a great camera, and Sony still makes it. I’d probably upgrade when it’s done.
@nazhamid @Luke I think if you want to shoot photos you can’t really go wrong with it. Camera sensors became so good at a point in time that everything since is just incremental. I’m a big fan of going out with one body one lens that you really like in a light sling bag for the day and making the most of constraints.
@alpower @Luke Same! I have a longer lens for outdoors, but this 35 is so good and versatile. Better than I expected. I’m definitely a prime person. That constraint and commitment as you say.
@nazhamid @alpower prime is the way. 💪
@Luke @nazhamid after much debate have just got myself a second hand A7R IV at a good price (ordered last night!) - just need to choose a prime lens (or two!)
@alpower @nazhamid fantastic, Al! Alpha is “on the way”! Sony makes great cameras that feel great. Can’t wait to hear about the smiles and raw tweaking in Aphera!
@Luke @nazhamid traded in a few old lenses and gone with Naz's choice of travel lens the Sony 24-105 G and a few Samyang primes to start with.
@alpower @Luke Curious how you get along with the 24-105! Congrats on the new camera setup.
