A local butter company is running into a legislative barrier. There's a two-tier system in Ontario. Small producers can sell direct to consumers, but not through retail or wholesale channels. the next step up requires a full industrial facility costing millions of dollars, and is only suited to large volume operations.

The Lofty Butter Company (https://loftybutter.ca/) is within 100km of me, makes wonderful butter, but if I want some, I have to drive for the better part of an hour round trip, and unless I have another reason to do that, it ain't happening until I have an EV.

So there's now a petition to see if we can get our provincial government to make it a little easier for the small businesses that they claim are the engine of our economy. If you're in Ontario, check it out: https://c.org/hVLt9fBTkD

@alan Good luck on making the step in regulation into more of a slope. Of course my eyes stopped when you said "until I get an EV." I wonder how many miles you drive per month and if you wouldn't be able to make money by trading in for an EV immediately.
@RustedComputing The calculation is somewhat more complex than a direct comparison of input costs. For my climate I wish hydrogen fuel cell vehicles were more available, but battery tech is moving at a sufficient pace where a BEV will soon be a viable choice. Meanwhile, we seek to minimize vehicle use and are averaging <1,000 km/month. For a rural area, that's not bad.
@alan Yes that's amazingly low rural mileage. Less than 1Mm/month makes it hard to pencil out in the immediate term. I would say twice that is closer to the no-brainer-do-it-right-now line.

@RustedComputing We combine trips whenever possible, do most of our shopping for dry goods on a 5-week cycle, so our crossover vehicle is often full on the trips we do make. Most else we get in town and that's <10 km round trip.

Canada just signed a trade deal that provides for the import of 80,000 Chinese EVs/year. If tech like this battery that Donut Lab is touting makes it to production, the next vehicle as an EV will be a no-brainer.

@alan I supported their thing but f*cking HATE change.org and their never ending spam emails after you support a cause.

@Alison So this time when I clicked on the "fuck you I am goddamn done with signing your fucking petition" link (also known as unsubscribe), they asked for a login, whereupon I got to select the don't send me anything, goddamnit!" option.

So they're starting to learn, maybe?

@alan Login? Plonkers
I do at every opportunity when unsubing tell them I signed a petition I didn't sign up for their spam.
@alan we [collectively] need to buy more from local producers and less from chains or large stores
