Hold on. Stop the music.

"The war was sold to the world — and to America’s Gulf allies — partly as a mission to restore freedom of navigation through the most critical oil chokepoint on the planet."

No it was not. What is this article saying, William? Are they trying to make the public think that Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz out of nowhere, unprovoked? Are we going to memory hole who dropped the first bombs?

On a school. Let's remember that too.

@futurebird I think it was more that Hegseth had a few drinks and got some beef tallow on his joystick and was just totally feeling himself and his masculinity, albeit with some shame, so he also heard himself some Jesus voices to pray, pray for extreme violence, and then he started a war that rejected 60 years of military doctrine that he disdained because he would have had to read all that. That is mostly open source.

@stalbaum

Please never mention "Hegseth" "beef tallow" and "joystick" in the same sentence ever again. I'm very brittle at the moment and cannot deal with this.

@futurebird @stalbaum i'm taking that last word completely literally and it helps take things down to merely surreal
@apophis @futurebird we forget, at our peril, that countries have been led by total wankers in the past, and that frequently their failures have led to a serious process of refocusing. That the #iranwar is related to Pete Hegseth's weird sexuality (which is obviously frustrated and includes high misogyny) is something to be understood by scholars in a continuum of other disturbed leaders. Including a man who had one ball.

@stalbaum @apophis

His speeches leave so much on the table I feel embarrassed for him.

My guy... there are books you could read that might help.

@futurebird @apophis almost as soon as I had assumed Freud was the old stuff, we need him again. That too is a disappointment in my life, this whole #maga suspension of evolution and progress, the return of psychoanalysis and measles makes me very sad.
@stalbaum @futurebird with all due respect it's this kind of talk, this kind of focus on salacious sexual deviance, this appeal to outdated pseudoscience that always seeks to conflate scientism with science in the popular mind, that pushes people *to* the antiscientific nonsense
@apophis @futurebird You have to think about the very real explanatory power of 19th century thought when it comes to #trump and an genealogy of #maga intellectual frameworks. Bringing this back to beef tallow, of course it does not cure ED through the mechanisms that maga and #maha presume! It is just slippery stuff on their junk, of course and certainly! But it is the 19th century frameworks for medicine, warfare (more Napoleonic than Clausewitzian* of course) etc that drive our history today.
@stalbaum @futurebird and we're all the worse for it - we've only started to recover from the worst abuses in recent decades
@apophis @futurebird yes, much worse for it. (Edit: I'm old enough to remember when the Clinton administration - for whom I have zero nostalgia - left a budget surplus. Dick Cheney knew exactly how to spend it and had this sock puppet named George W with which to realize his sick fantasies...)
