Ah this is perfect, found a quiet corner of the Hermitage Hotel cafe at Aoraki/Mt Cook in which to do some writing. I can even take refreshing looks at the mountain from time to time.

And crikey that coffee cost NZ$7.50! About $2 more than anywhere else. Luckily that's only about A$6, par for the course in Melbourne.

@timrichards

Is coffee really AU$6.00..? how big of a serving are we talking here?

For comparison sake: a 475 ml cup of "americano" here costs on average $55.00 which could make it around AU$4.50 (+/- 10%).

Specialty coffee houses rise that price a bit to around $90.00 averaged which would make it $7.20 (+/- 10%).

@oscarfalcon More or less. I drink a 'long black' which is like a better Americano (two-shot, coffee added after water), and a standard-sized one of those is about 200ml and costs A$5.5-$6.00 in a cafe using good coffee beans. A cheap one with less good coffee might be A$4.50.
@oscarfalcon I should add that the minimum wage in Australia is currently A$24.95 per hour, which is about US$17.25 or MXN 310). That must affect prices at cafes too.

@timrichards

It does, prices change a lot going around the country... (not counting airports or malls).

@timrichards

Regular cafeteria coffee, the traditional kind (not chain) is about $40.00 on average (AU$3.20 (+/- 10%)).
