The garlic I planted last October is sprouting nicely.

@yngmar
how did it survive the cold, did you cover it with something?

@pocketvj Just with that mulch, which is actually a section of the animal barn floor that I raked up and threw on top. Bit of straw, bit of bark, lots of mouse poop.

Garlic loves cold and is well adapted to it. Don't ask me how it does it, perhaps it contains little or no water that could rupture its cells when freezing, but don't quote me on that.

I put them 8 cm deep and that seems to have worked well. We still have mild night frosts currently.

@yngmar
thanks,
i will try it too next autumn..!
for sure i have to make some kind of raised beds to prevent that they stay in the melting/freezing flood, but if they survive the winters, wow

@pocketvj Our garden is conveniently slightly sloped, unlike the yard where I had to pump the giant puddles out of 😆

Snow is quite a good insulation too. Hard frost without snow is usually much worse.

@yngmar the field of no vampires 👍

@mcSlibinas Whatever creature dug up the entire grass next to it during winter also didn't like garlic :)

Maybe vampire moles.

@yngmar How are you able to keep garlic in the ground for more than 5 minutes without anti-bird protection?
@Coffee What garlic eating birds do you have?
@yngmar Corvids! Jackdaws in particular.

@Coffee Ah, we have security guards. Nothing larger than a starling permitted in the area.

Some blue jays return for the acorns but only after the storks are gone in autumn.
