Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Requires More RAM Than Windows 11?

Canonical has raised the minimum RAM requirement to 6 GB, while Windows 11 still sits at 4 GB. But that's only a number and it doesn't tell the real story.

It's FOSS
@itsfoss ah. Kind of like how Pixel's have dedicated RAM for Gemini, it's not listing the total RAM needed., making it seem like it uses less.
@itsfoss Microsoft might say win11 runs on 4gb but its fantasy you need 8gb for it to be bearable and if you plan on doing any actual work 16gb
@itsfoss
Microsoft says that 4 GB of RAM is the minimum requirement for Windows 11... What does that mean? Does that mean you can start the installation without it failing? And then you just end up staring at the desktop background? 🀣

> If your machine has 4 GB of RAM, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS should still be a decent fit,

I doubt with these specs any Ubuntu derivat is fitting.
There are distributions out there with less scripting in runtime. One could use Debian for example.

@sebsch Debian would work too. πŸ™Œ

@itsfoss @sebsch Over time, I question using #Ubuntu over #Debian.

Not sure I’ll use either on my next #Linux build, but #Debian is certainly looking like a more attractive option rn.

@itsfoss honestly it's the Windows figure that seems divorced from reality. My work PC hovers at 9 GB used before I even open an app. Add to that the 1.5 GB reserved by the onboard GPU and I quickly hit virtual memory by opening the mandatory electron apps.
@itsfoss
why shouldn't I switch to light weight Xfce displaymanager ? Gnome also should be resized downwards. I promise Ubuntu doesn't need so many GBs any more.
