Strap in for this week's high-octane edition of #ThePlaylist, where our theme is:

Fast

Or, for our Northern comrades, 'fast'.

Will the tunes rocket along at 300bpm, or will they be about being fast? Or a secret third option. Listen in to find out.

The tunes played on this week's show, in case I zipped by too fast and the doppler effect meant you couldn't understand me.

NEXT WEEK ON #ThePlaylist, our theme will be:

Tin

@Troggie and I will be celebrating ten years of marriage on the 9th of April, and for that I can only apologise to them. But they knew what they were getting into before, so it's not entirely my fault.

Anyway, the tenth anniversary is traditionally 'tin', presumably because it's sponsored by Big Tin and Cornwall. And this radio show will be my present to Troggie. My generosity knows no bounds.

So fling your suggestions at me using #ThePlaylistSuggestion, and make Troggie's day as wonderful as possible.

@DJDarren @Troggie I’ll go with either

ā€˜Beeside’ or ā€˜Vacuum Cleaner’ by Tintern Abbey

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren @Troggie many congratulations! 🄳

I got two #hiphop #thePlaylistSuggestion suggestions for the theme Tin:

LL Cool J’s classic track I’m Bad - ā€œMCs can’t win, I make ā€˜em rust like tinā€

Gang Starr - Full Clip, an original track from Gang Starr’s greatest hits album celebrating 10 years of records (1989-1999), which thanks to you I now know why it features tin in the artwork šŸ˜…

@DJDarren @Troggie #ThePlaylistSuggestion
I thought this was going to be a struggle - tin certainly isn't one of the elements most often used in songs, although probably more common than ytterbium or oganesson.

But anyway, I managed to come up with some songs quite quickly after all.

Al Jolson - Toot, Toot, Tootsie!
(because it's a classic from the golden age of Tin Pan Alley - and I like that it says toot! a lot)

Sunnyland Slim - Tin Pan Alley

Tiny Topsy - Aw! Shucks Baby
(that's TINy Topsy)

Gloria Jones - Tin Can People

The Blue Nile - Tinseltown in the Rain
(that's TINseltown, and I was shocked to look at the database and find this hasn't been on before)

@DJDarren @Troggie Please Mr DJ can I put in a vote for "Kiss Me" by Stephen Duffy. Ideally the original version which was recorded by the band Tin Tin but if not then the hugely successful mid-80s re-recording still works because of course he was calling himself Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy for that one.
#ThePlaylistSuggestion

Also congratulations to both of you for ten years (which if you say with a cod South African accent might actually sound like tin years).

@DJDarren @Troggie Just the one #playlistSuggestion I think this time, and a pretty obvious one: Tom Lehrer's 'The Elements'
šŸŽ¶ … And chlorine, carbon, cobalt, copper, tungsten, tin, and sodium.

Tom Lehrer - The Elements - LIVE FILM From Copenhagen in 1967

YouTube

@DJDarren @Troggie I'd have tried to shoehorn Tin Tin Out's version of 'Here's Where the Story Ends' in too, but I don't think using a band's name cuts it, does it? Still, TUNE!

Tin Tin Out - Here's Where The Story Ends (Official Music Video)

YouTube
@pete definitely cuts it! @DJDarren @Troggie
@mothninja @pete Yep, what Mothy said. The more tenuous the better!

@DJDarren @Troggie Congrats! The wife and I hit 20 2 weeks ago.

I'll get in early with #theplaylistsuggestion of Tin Tin out - "Here's Where The Story Ends" which is no reflection on either of our relationships!!

@DJDarren Crush - Tall Dwarfs (because you used to have to crush tin cans before recycling them)
Tin Ihlan - Tinariwen (I've no idea what this is about, but it starts with the word tin)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren @Troggie congrats you two šŸ’š

This is probably the most obscure suggestion I'm ever going to make - I ripped it off a .mov file somewhere on the internet about two decades and a couple of computers ago, love it but haven't thought about it in ages, and turns out it is now _exceptionally_ difficult to find, but it remains an absolute banger

Old Tin Can - Candlebone

@mothninja @DJDarren @Troggie This is about the most Tom Waitsian thing that isn’t actually by Tom Waits.

@mothninja @DJDarren @Troggie Ok, there’s a good reason for that as Moris Tepper of this band was in Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band and also played on Frank’s Wild Years for Tom Waits. And he played with Frank Black.

Off down a Moris Tepperhole now, thanks!

@Nickiquote ooh did not know the Waits connection, but makes sense. Tepper has some great stuff!

@DJDarren

@DJDarren What a theme. This has stretched my capabilities somewhat, but I have persevered, for love.

Christopher Tin and the Soweto Gospel Choir - Baba Yetu (aka the GLORIOUS theme for Civilization IV)
Fightstar - Paint Your Target (paint comes in tins!)
ATARASHII GAKKO! - Pineapple Kryptonite (pineapple also comes in tins!)

Ridiculous k-pop suggestion:

Jin - Super Tuna (Jin from global superstars BTS singing a sub-two-minute song about tuna, which of course comes in tins!)

I think you've defeated Papa Steph, but I may update later.

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@astronomerritt @DJDarren
Oh my GOODNESS I never knew what the Civ 4 music was, but LOVE (and now I want to play Civ 4 again, by a country mile the best Civ game don't @ me) Great suggestion!

@mothninja @DJDarren It's an absolutely gorgeous song! Won a Grammy, even. I could have sat on that title screen for hours. There's a terrific recording on YouTube from Cadogan Hall:

https://youtu.be/noneMROp_E8

Baba Yetu Live | Cadogan Hall 2016

YouTube

@astronomerritt just magnificent. Might have teared up a little bit. This should be the global national anthem šŸ’š

@DJDarren

@DJDarren All right, Papa Steph has, with a sense of both triumph and relief, suggested:

Suzi Quatro - Can The Can

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@astronomerritt @DJDarren Good shout, PĆØre Steph.
@Nickiquote @DJDarren He may have outdone me this week. I was frantically searching my music library for songs about soup.
@astronomerritt @DJDarren I second Pineapple Kryptonite!

@DJDarren @Troggie

The Presidents of the United States of America - Peaches

Because of the famous line, ā€œpeaches come from a tin, they were put there by a min, in a factory downtownā€

The Presidents of the United States of America - Peaches (Official HD Music Video)

YouTube
@DJDarren @Troggie I was going to suggest Tin Soldier by the Small Faces but we had that a fortnight ago.

@DJDarren @Troggie

My 5 pence worth....

Queen, We Will Rock You (because I like to imagine the can he's kicking all over the place is made of tin, and also it's something you can say on your wedding anniversary like when you go out for a nice dinner for example)

Edit - changed my mind because I wanted to. I want to say Any Old Iron by Peter Sellers, but no matter how I contort it, iron and tin are different elements. However I like to imagine that when collecting any old iron, inevitably some tin might make it's way in there somehow.

These are shit suggestions aren't they.

@DJDarren

Here you go:
Lick the Tins: Can’t Help Falling in Love
Elias and His Zig-Zag Jive Flutes: Tom Hark
Show of Hands: Cousin Jack

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@pdcawley @DJDarren Oooh, I like Cousin Jack. I have to admit to not being quite as familiar with the other two.

Happy Anniversary! Darren/Troggie!

@lnr @DJDarren Tom Hark’s a glorious tin whistle led instrumental that, for some reason acquired an English lyric and became an English football song. Because of course it did.

Lick the Tins were a pretty decent Irish one hit wonder whose name stuck in my head for just this moment :)

@DJDarren

This isn’t about tin so you probably won’t play it but you can’t stop me from suggesting it.

Cowboy Junkies - Anniversary Song

@DJDarren But if I have to stay on-topic here’s a stab at it

Destroyer - Tinseltown Swimming in Blood

Destroyer - Tinseltown Swimming in Blood

YouTube

@DJDarren @Troggie Happy anniversary to you both!

I'm stretching things a bit here but here goes:

The Rocker - Thin Lizzy (who were named after a cartoon strip in the Dandy called Tin Lizzie - "Thin" being pronounced "Tin" in Dublin, approximately)

The Gravel Walks to Grannie - Damien McGeehan (from his album The Tin Fiddle which is played on a tin fiddle)

On the Road Again - Canned Heat (canned = tinned, obvs, but also for the "tin sandwich" aka harmonica)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren @Troggie Hang on, I have one more!

Daisy Bell by Tin Hat which I think is a perfect Anniversary song! (and also features bicycles which is always a good thing!)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren

- Stan by Eminem (the symbol for tin is Sn from the Latin stannum)

- Packt Like Sardines In a Crushd Tin Box by Radiohead

- Space Oddity by Bowie (ā€œfloating round my tin canā€)

- Cheek to Cheek by Fred Astaire or Stormy Weather by Ethel Waters (Tin Pan Alley, innit)

And Dr Mrs Swisslet suggests:

- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Dinah Washington

- If I Only Had a Heart by the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz

- Nikita by Elton John (ā€œcounting ten tin soldiers in a rowā€)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren
Right.*cracks knuckles*

Tin, the element, has the symbol "Sn", from the Latin "stannum".

So, my suggestion is Stan Bush - The Touch

This was on The Transformers Movie soundtrack and as such is so deeply ingrained in my consciousness that it will probably be my earworm on my dying day.

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren
World Cup Drumming by McLusky.
The Silver Platter by Xiu Xiu.
Junkhead by Alice in Chains.
Mr Helle came in with an evil grin and has suggested Smurfing Beer by Father Abraham and The Smurfs. He says because they and Tin Tin are both from Belgium.
#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren David Bowie - Space Oddity (šŸŽµ For here am I sitting in a tin can šŸŽµ)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren @Troggie Happy anniversary! Some #AusMusic "tin" themed songs for you to choose from. #ThePlaylistSuggestion

Tin Legs And Tin Mines - Midnight Oil. S'obvious innit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9RlH8Uc6fg

Innerbloom - RÜFÜS DU SOL
It's a magical musical journey released in 2016, so also celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Appropriately "If you want me, If you need me, I'm yours".

(There is the less magical radio edit if the full version is too long).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx9zMFodNtA

And lastly - Tasmania had the largest tin mines in the Southern Hemisphere for a while - similar to Cornwall. My favourite Tassie act are an "indie noir" band called "The Paradise Motel". They were stunning live.

Bad Light - The Paradise Motel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57F5wdCF9n4

Drive - The Paradise Motel (covering The Cars). There's also a Mogwai remix for the resident Mogwai lover.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlK1y07UjtM

Tin Legs And Tin Mines (Remastered Version)

YouTube
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Tin Pan Alley (AKA Roughest Place in Town) (Audio)

@DJDarren
I had forgotten that was so long.

So, also suggesting
CAN - Vitamin C
https://youtu.be/XNfp7s1atAw
(As in cans are made of tin.)
#ThePlaylistSuggestion

Can - Vitamin C (The Singles Pt. 3) (Official Video)

YouTube

@DJDarren @Troggie

This triggered some different options:

Jimi Hendrix - 51st Anniversary
This includes the line "Ten years you've been married"

Jamiroquai - Canned Heat

Tom Lehrer - The Elements

And given that tin is a metal, here's some metal from Samoa:

Shepherds Reign - Le Manu
