The Iranian military consists of approximately 610,000 active-duty personnel and around 350,000 reserve personnel, totalling about 960,000 military personnel. This makes it the largest military force in the Middle East in terms of active troops.

Trump is going to send perhaps 20,000 marines up against them.

A very high death toll would mean the end for Trump

@Geri If Us & Israel decide it would be quicker and easier to drop a nuke on Iran rather than see a lot of dead US soldiers, they won’t hesitate to do so. That the radiation fallout will destroy many countries and millions of people wouldn’t bother them for a second: because Trump could claim he ‘won’. Trump, Netenyahu et al don’t care what damage they do as long as their bank accounts get bigger, and they appear to be the winner.

@HarriettMB @Geri but it is much easier to sell the world, or, err, the Straight of Hormuz. And that is how it looks like this plays out in any non-further-escalated end to the madness. #USA and #Israel pay nothing directly. #Iran gets reparations through new toll taking to pass through newly sovereign Iranian waters. Saudi and Iraq have and are improving pipelines, so they don't care. #bahrain #uae #kuwait #qatar pay the toll, but pass that on. The world pays for the #trump and #netanyahu sins.

ISTR reading the phrase "Iran is under the Pakistani nuclear umbrella" in a moderately reputable news source a few weeks ago, and however crazy Trump might be, I think Netanyahu is probably rational enough not to get into that exchange.

(It occurs to me that, of all the nuclear-armed states, Israel is probably the least geographically suited to surviving a nuclear war.)
