Be very mindful about the content you consume online.

You might think you are above its negative influence on your mood and thoughts, but you aren't. Nobody is.

The content you consume influences the way you think over time. Even if you are on a platform to fight the opposition, what the algorithm is feeding you there will have an influence on yourself over time.

Be careful what you feed to your brain.

@Em0nM4stodon As a neuroscientist, I approve this message!
Also, things we do just before going to sleep seem to be the things that will be most consolidated in your memory, so we should be particularly mindful of what we "feed our brains" at that time!

@elduvelle @Em0nM4stodon

I've been tweaking my night time rituals lately, and am really curious about this. Do you have any reliable sources about this you can link me to?

Specifically interested in the 'memory consolidation before sleep' stuff.

Thanks!

hi @RussSharek, sorry I was slow to answer, I actually have a colleague currently working on exactly this (in rats) but the paper is not published yet. There must be studies in humans demonstrating it though so once I've had time to look for those I'll post about them here!
but yes the general gist is that the last thing that you do before sleeping, if it's a new thing, will be "rehearsed" more by your neurons during sleep and that should help remembering it better compared to some other new thing you did that day.

...which the creates the following dilemma:

Do I expose myself to news about topics which I care and worry about, or do I avoid them? Following happenings that I probably can't change may just bring me down (in fact, it does, and it's not pretty!) but ignoring them means I forego the ability to even have an informed opinion, and basically ignore a catastrophe that could be at least softened if enough people gave a damn ...

@Em0nM4stodon

@Em0nM4stodon I am even carefully curating my Fedifollowing as some of the newer follows this past year are active in boosting toots that I find begin to drag me into a more negative headspace.

Someone repeatedly brings me down either with their own toots or boosts? Mute their boosts, and possibly mute them or even unfollow them.

@ambientspace Excellent πŸ‘ I personally use Filters a lot for this. That way, I can keep following the people I like and their boosts, but will hide the specific content that I have no spoons for at the moment.
@Em0nM4stodon that is a good idea. I need to figure out how to do this (I did it years ago for some items, but have forgotten how).

Tiny Mastodon Tip to Hide Topics 🫣 :mastodon: If you get tired of seeing some topics in your Mastodon feeds, Know that you can use "Filters" to help you save your spoons. HOW TO ❓ From the desktop web interface: 1. Go to "Preferences" on the right-side menu. 2. Click on "Filters" on the left-side menu. 3. At the top-right, click on the "Add new filter" button. 4. Give a name to your filter in the "Title" field at the top, for example "US Politics". This Title will be displayed instead of the post and you will have the option to click on the Title to reveal a filtered post in your feeds πŸ‘€ 5. Select the options you prefer. I recommend selecting "Hide with a warning" at first. That way, you will see if your Filter works and get the option described above to see it ⚠️ :blocky_white_cursor: 6. In "KEYWORDS", add the hashtags, words, names, or expressions you wish to hide for this topic. Select "Whole word" on the right. 7. Click on "Add keyword" at the bottom to add as many hashtags, names, or words that you wish for a same topic :neocat_book: 8. Click on "Save new filter". 9. Magic! πŸ₯„βœ¨ Bonus Tip! To help everyone's filters work, on Mastodon it's good to use uncensored names and hashtags in your posts. That way, people will be able to filter it out if they wish πŸ’š #TinyMastodonTip #Mastodon #Filters

@Em0nM4stodon I’m sure it will, but first I need to fill a tank with gluten-free beer (some assembly required).
@ambientspace I agree with this priority order. Cheers! 🍻✨

@Em0nM4stodon Oh boy... my producer had it really bad for a couple years (in particular, AI craze in RP). He's done stuff to minimize it, and is currently taking a break from it.

Then again... the type of stuff we consume otherwise is outside of this influence.

@Em0nM4stodon fullack. It takes a little bit of your mental health. Every single time.
And at the end of the day you feel a little bit worse that before.
@Em0nM4stodon I so very much agree!! Our brains are being rewired without our direct consent. ..
@Em0nM4stodon Also consider this a lot, I got off twitter and Facebook years ago for this very reason, love the communities I've come across here!
@Em0nM4stodon I really hate to be pedantic *not* but I think you mean 'over time' - two words signifying and an episodic or continuous process completed over a duration of time - and NOT 'overtime' -one word signifying excess duration of a project or normal work - apologies, but if you have a message, it is important to express it clearly to reduce the change of misunderstanding.
@sjcooke66 Indeed. Typos happen, and my autocarrot isn't helping. https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon/115787556985092446

Just so you know, sometimes I inadvertently write typos. Yes, typos are a fact of writing life. Especially when posting when I'm tired, or without my glasses on. My autocarrot is working against me for this. If I catch a typo early, I will edit it (thank you edit feature πŸ™), but if I don't catch it early I might decide not to correct it. The reason for this is each time you edit a post, it sends a notification to each person who interacted with it. If I edit a post with 500 boosts for a minor "it/is" typo that isn't really changing the meaning, I will be annoying at least 500 people with a notification just for this. And it's worse if I edit an already edited post. I try to be considerate in my estimation of the annoyance of the typo vs the annoyance of the notification. Thank you for your patience and tolerance with my typos.

@Em0nM4stodon @sjcooke66 i didn’t realize it sent a notification out every time you edit a post, thanks for the PSA here
@Em0nM4stodon already have deleted X (Twitter) and facebook never had Tiktok either πŸ‘
@unknowingvoid This is the way πŸ‘
@Em0nM4stodon Heard and agree. Too many tigers in the woods to be aware of these days. Unfortunately, dopamine is a hell of a drug and I need a timer to eject me from the social media network. πŸ––
@Em0nM4stodon Gammon rants (which I've seen vastly less of since I stopped doing Twitter) only inflame me to despise gammons even more.
@Em0nM4stodon @onepict This is why I’m religious about using an ad blocker everywhere. And I know it’s healthy cause my sons friends prefer to come to our house cause there’s no ads or popups etc
@Em0nM4stodon @User47 Well said! But that goes for Mastodon, too. There's a lot of crap floating around, even though there's no algorithm to boost it.

@mlanger

And not all of the bad-effect posts are from bad-intent people -- I noticed a lot of people venting, not unreasonably, about affairs of the world after 9pm, when we're slowing down at the end of the day, and absolutely, it was ruining my sleep. So I blocked their posts without unfollowing. Self-defense! Their doomscrolling had become mine, second hand.

When I read "news" it's morning; at night, read fiction.

I have to curate what I put in my face or it does me harm.

@Em0nM4stodon @User47

@tomjennings @Em0nM4stodon @User47 Yes! I have all kinds of filters set up. I try not to share doomscrolling fuel but once in a while I get so angry and frustrated that one slips out, usually in reply to someone else.
@Em0nM4stodon
I took a year out from the
#fediverse. It was unplanned. I just couldn't face logging back in. The posters are saying curate your timeline are 100% right, blocking or muting certain types of posts doesn't mean sticking your head in the sand.
@Em0nM4stodon
As they say, you are not immune to propaganda.
