I've been listening to the audio book "A Deepness in the Sky" by Vernor Vinge. The spacefaring humans in the story use units of time like "kilosecs" and "megasecs," which come across one way when read on the page and in an entirely different way when pronounced aloud.
@mogwai_poet we know they enjoyed the travelling but how long did it take to get to Mars?
@naturepunk @mogwai_poet lots and lots of secs.
@pusakat @mogwai_poet does it even count if it's not megasecs?

@mogwai_poet reading in the Unreal Tournament announcer voice.

KILOSECS. MEGASECS. ULTRASECS!!

@mogwai_poet Great book. Did you listen/read "A Fire Upon the Deep" first?
@erikosterholm Yeah! I read and loved both maybe twenty years ago. I just finished A Fire Upon the Deep and it's just as good as I'd remembered.

@mogwai_poet I first read them 13 years ago, then again around the time that Children of the Sky came out. I've been getting the itch for a reread.

They may be my favorite books of all time.
